Technical New oil 100HP

Technical New oil 100HP

or in any revisions they bring out

some one on this forum had full main dealer sh on their stilo abarth, that dealer put castrol gtx in, that engine died, big ends and other damage with less than 55k on it

exactly Dave

when engines are developed they are endurance tested on a specific oil and if the engines pass the durability testing with that oil it is approved(y)

so why risk being a guinea pig for a £20 bottle of oil - that is my point Chris I hope you understand

Oh yes Rob I understand and get your point.

What I find hard to believe is 2-3 Chains of main Fiat Dealers who are responsible for all servicing and repairs under warranty or otherwise, being allowed to use as you and dave describe as the "Wrong oil" that can damage engine to that extent. Potentially causing ££££'s of damage for Fiat to pay for.

My thoughts are it can't be that damaging if their willing to take the risk for the sake of a few quid. My I repeat that once the engine is up to 70*c (usually after 3-5mins) the first rating doest matter and from then on its the second rating that matters which is the SAME. The Second number in the rating is the most important one and shouldn't be changed.

For instance I use 10w/50 in the coupe as it maintains its consistancy while really hot (coupe engines do under enthusiastic driving) to maintain oil pressure.

I cannot imagine why, other than as Dave has suggested 'bulk deal' by the purchasing division of the dealer group for commercial reasons - makes no sense technically to take such a risk

I know the Chairman of Perrys who are a multi marque dealership so will ask him next time I see him (y)

I thought I would join back in to say sorry I started this post
as all I wanted was a bit of advice about oil for my HP as a new
owner. Is this how all the posts for a bit of info are answered?
Chill out I've read the earlier posts and come to my own conclusions.
So a big thanks to all who responded re my question and those who
didn't life's to short(y)

Cheers Colin..

Exactly mate so long as the ACEA rating is ok it's fine.

I agree with Colin we need to relax a bit (y)

It's actually a bit more complicated than that. 0w40, 5w40 and 10w40 are only the same thickness at 100'c, which many a road car won't achieve. 5w40 is thinner than 10w40 at 70'c.

I have yet to see oil temps reach 70'c in 3-5 minutes, usually it takes a lot longer to heat up that much unless you're caning it - which you'll know is a bad thing from cold.

True but as you say it's more complicated than that. The difference in viscosity at 70C of 5W40 and 10W40 is only around 7% for typical oils.

You would see a similar percentage difference in viscosity at 70C between 10W40 oils if the 100C cst value was away from the typical 14 and towards the 40 grade limits of 12.5 and 16.3. Even 15 versus 14 cst at 100C would make the viscosity difference 5% at 70C.

Always remember that 40 is a wide ranging grade (y)

I previously said that the difference between 10W40 and 5W40 at cold would be around 10-15%, this was a guess based on a 10W40 oil having a 40C viscosity somewhat lower than 98 cst. We can see that it would be around 30-35% thinner based on the oils here at usual starting temperatures.

Hiya Colin, sorry you'd been ignored, it can get a bit testosterone filled between the regulars (as you can see), I hope you don't take it personally as it's nothin agasint you or anything, just it's all got a bit out of hand.

Have you managed to find out what you needed from the other posts you've said you've read?

Jon.

has hasnt been ignored it was an ending statement:rolleyes:

I was referring to the fiat 'data sheets' that dave mentioned, thanks for taking the time to post the link though Rob. (y)

Incidentally dave, I searched for the information that you mentioned and all I found was this and this, familiar answers..

In fact, that second thread is great, it degenerates in the same way as this has and the same so-called facts are thrown in without any link to evidence. I have no reason to disbelieve, but I tend to not take the word of complete strangers as gospel, hence asking for links to something vaguely resembling professional opinion or official documentation.

you need to chill mate, he hasn't 'been ignored' he has only recently posted and actually as Dave has pointed out his post is retorical and his question has been answered(y)

testosterone filled?, no not really just trying to emphasis an important issue.
all has been said now and i think the point has been made and supported by several 'regulars' as you put it:cool:

:yeahthat:

Just got the impression that it had scared / alienated the OP'er ;)

we are all adults in here, there's not enough passionate honest debate in this world in my opinion, people too scared about being politically correct and upsetting someone

if people spoke their mind more there would be less confusion in the world

Agreed, I'm not against the debate, I joined in at the beginning and probably helped start it. :)
