Hi everyone, I’m sure this has been covered a million times,
Recently got a fiat panda 100hp loving it, I want to give it a service though as I’m fairly sure not been looked after well (already had to put a recon gearbox in)

Question is what engine oil?
I’ve been recommended so many different ones 15w40/10w40/10w60
But all the websites say 5w40.

It’s on 101000 miles and admittedly I do have a little bit of a heavy foot plus it does mainly sit on a motorway.

5W40 or 10W40 both are fine

Should be in your owner manual if you got one

Personally I'd go 10W40 with 100k on the clock
Thanks,
think thats what I’ll opt for as other people have said the same thing, just wasn’t sure if would be to thick and cause damage on start up.

Between the two it makes little difference both are 40 when warm

The difference between 5 and 10 is minimal

I know @A3jeroen runs 5W40 their 100HP without any problems

I find 5 tend to use and leak more if the engine has been neglected or higher milage
I’ve only had her 6 months and according to the paperwork it’s been kept upto date with servicing so unsure on the neglected part,
But she is over 100k

5 will cold behave like a thinner oil and reach all places where lubrication is needed sooner than 10W40. My Abarth rins on 5W50 and if I could find 5W60 or even 0W60 I would probably use that.

Yea so your saying go thinner for the cold starts?
A friend of mine used 10w60 on one of his old cars and swears tht the only reason it held 🤣

Synthetic A3/B3 is fine. In the UK, the grade is almost irrelevent because it's just about temperature. It doesnt get cold enough the UK to warrant running the NA engine on anything less than a 5 and being NA you dont need anything more than 40 (You will find that when you go to the motorfactors for oil, it will be 5w30 and 10w40 that they sell and also what fiat have in the handbook). There are exceptions to this example but the 1.4 FIRE engine isn't one of them untill you bolt a snail on it. With higher miles, I'd go with a thicker oil. I last ran my NA on 10w40.

I would not recommend using an Abarth oil which is a specific specification 0101 10w50 and is meant to run in heatsoaked engine. The NA is fine on the cheap stuff as long as it meets A3/B3 and is fully synthetic. The Abarth oil is £16 a litre which is probably twice the price of a generic synthetic A3/B3

I never said anyone should use Abarth oil in a Panda 100 hp...
Just that 5W40 full synth is fine in a 1.4 and lubricates quicker and better on a cold start than 10Wxx.
Because my Abarth runs so much hotter under the hood (bonnet?) I find a high number behind the W more important.
In general I would like these numbers as far apart as possible (and/or necessary).

Hi guys thanks for the help and input, I’ve decided on Castrol magnetic 10w40,
see how that goes, tbf after reading a lot of threads I’m going to do an oil change every 6months or so
