Technical Exhaust Backbox Corrosion Issue

mine had corroded really badly just over 2 years / 2 winters and would have needed to replace it anyway, as it was i used it as an opportunity to upgrade to the Supersprint system

if you really want/expect better build quality than this you should have bought jap or german, sorry but that is how it is with Italian cars sometimes the quality is a bit patchy around the edges

Ulpian, fiat are expecting people to pay. warrenty is a year

Not much of a warranty then. When my Daihatsu (Japanese for those who think Japanese cars are so great) showed similar decay, as I said, twice within the three year warranty, the dealer just whipped the thing off and replaced it - no questions asked.

It made for great good will, but I got rid of the thing at three years old because I didn't want to be replacing the exhaust every eighteen months. Perhaps they were from an unlucky batch, but I wasn't about to do the research.

Funnily enough I then bought a Suzuki which needed two wheel bearings replaced under warranty ;)

As for German quality: you can find my tale of the Mercedes E Class elsewhere; suffice to say it is the most unreliable badly built piece of automotive **** ever to be botched together in a car factory.

Ditto with my 406 though it was old.

Almost got me divorced that exhaust did

why, what were you doing to it that made the wife mad?

on a serious note, these 500 exhausts are failing way too early
my car is an 02 plate/130K miles and just had its original exhaust welded for a small blow

Well it's more to do with where I was when the exhaust fell off and that I didn't tell her I was going there :p

Just checked under mine and its blowing from the rear of the backbox. Car is 21 months old now and does alot of short journeys which won't help but I still think its poor. My fiat coupe did the same journeys as my 500 for 4yrs and its exhaust is still fine and our Skoda is still on its original exhaust after 5yrs. Anyway, gives me chance to think about something aftermarket.

Correct me if I´m totally wrong, but wasnt there a hole in the backbox originally? I remember that back in -08 when the 500 was all new model there was some discussion about this. It has something to do with the nice exhaust sound that the 500 has and I dont think it´s there because of corrosion.

These aren't lasting very well at all, and winter is no excuse. I'd be expecting it replaced considering my dads focus exhaust is on its 5th year now and mine despite being 4 years old and having had the same hard winter and 3 others before looks like this on a car that retails for the same if not a bit cheaper than a 500.

I quite like it when cars randomly change their exhaust sound through a fault, I remember when my old Metro dropped to 3 cylinders running on a cherry bomb exhaust, it sounded like an Impreza, I wanted to keep it like that. :ROFLMAO:

On a more serious note, I'll check mine tomorrow as it was sounding a bit loud from the outside the other day.

Just checked my nearly 3 year old 100HP. Exhaust still looks perfect, so maybe the 500 uses cheaper inferior material. Below on my sig. is a pic of the Magnetti back box.

I like the look of that Magneti exhaust. Does it sound any better than the standard Fiat one?

My 406 sounded a little like a big V8 with lumpy cams when the exhaust fell off. Went about as fast as a scooter though :p
