Technical Exhaust Backbox Corrosion Issue

JTD_Liam....I'm really not happy about it, honest.

I have called Fiat UK & they think it's "not very good" but have also in the same breath said exhausts are oly covered for 1 year.

They have opened a case now & have said they MAY send me some vouchers for use at my local Fiat garage, but said it's unlikely that they'll pay for the whole cost.

Ah i see. Im glad youve contacted Fiat UK about it, i wasn't sure of this when i posted.

Still seems like theyre trying to justify something that can't really be justified. The engine has a 3 year warranty but it doesn't mean it'll blow up at 3 years 1 month. Just seems like theyre making excuses for poor quality.

When Fiats were really cheap you could kinda accept the odd shortcoming, but as their prices rise they need to realise that so should quality & backup.

Hope you get something out of them anyway, i think it's justified.

Mark, Since reading your post, I thought id look under my car I was shocked at the corrosion under my exhaust back box has start of inch long hole and conecting pipe resembles that of the titanics handrail. my cars 15month old Ive never had a new car before always bangers. Which has left me shocked at the quality of the OEM exhaust on mine. Ill watch your post with interest to find out what step to take next to just fit a new one myself or to go down to the dealer which I think will be pretty pointless if the year warranty for exhausts is anything to go by...Sad

Looks pretty impressive already. Mine is only averaging 49.3 (but she's still only 600 miles old which means I definitely need to get out more!)

At the moment the current tank (first one since service) is reading 54.8mpg

Well I'm here and the old system is off (and it's quite corroded). The guys are making a system, actually fabricating two small silencers (one large is the std Fiat way) with perforated inserts and glass/wire packing. Reason for two silencers is due to not being baffeld systems would make it too noisey with one.

It's not too bad. It's noy wuite up to the std of a £400 job, but I'm prettyy pleased.

A little boomy at about 80mph, but at 78 & below it's no worse than std at cruising speeds.

I think I'll go and check my exhaust when I've got a moment. And I'm sure my engine's sounding a bit louder than it normally does.

The blowing was from the 3 spot welds along the top of the silencer.
