My mate who sat in the car whilst I pushed it said he heard a crackling sound from the engine bay drivers side when it started. The smell is definitely coming from the belt area
The alternator might be cooked, there are only 3 bolts on them, and all 3 are accessible, so if you need to change it then its easy to do. A hundred squid off ebay for new, cheaper if you buy second hand.

Thanks. Is it easy to take the belt off so I can check if everything spins ok? I have air con
