Would’ve been handy 😂 I’m thinking of getting the 1.9 diesel punto. There’s one for sale for £800 near me in really good condition don’t think if it’ll be a good buy
Three things to check, the expensive ones.

1) Engine, get your head under it and check for leaks, listen carefully to the engine
2) Gearbox, test drive it and make sure its smooth as silk, don't forget reverse
3) Clutch, accelerate up a hill to make sure its not slipping.

And good luck...when the door falls off lol

Thanks. 👍😂

Just a quick update. Tried jump starting but didn’t make any difference. I’ll bump start tomorrow see what happens.
Can still be the starter, see if it gets hot to the touch after a short time cranking the engine, or if it smells of burnt wiring.
Recently some with Ducato Motorhomes have had to change starters due to similar issues and been amazed how much faster the engine turns over.

Yeah I’m thinking it might be the starter tbh. One thing I haven’t checked is the starter ground. I tried to get a jump cable to the starter to act as a ground but I can’t get it on. Do you know where the starter ground is? Thanks 👍

The starter is grounded through the engine/gearbox. Hence why we check if thats a problem by putting a jump lead from the battery negative to the engine/gearbox.

That’s what I thought. I found this video about a starter wire that breaks but can’t seem to figure where it is it’s worth a check lol.

That is the earth wire, it goes from the battery negative to the chassis and then on to the gearbox. Its the gearbox to chassis leg that broke on his car. These break on probably every Punto sooner or later, but this design fault was fixed/improved with the Punto EVO from 2010.

This isn't technically a "starter wire" because it earths other electrics from the engine to the battery negative. But its the same purpose just in a round about way.

Ah ok. So when I done the jumper leads as earths would that rule that wire out?

I'm not sure if you've bumped a car lately, so just as a reminder the key must be in the "on" position when you let the clutch out. I may have forgotten this recently and tried to bump the car with the engine off lol.
Haha I did that before and completely forgot the fuel pump wouldn’t be on without the key😂

I remember this one because I'd been stuck static in a traffic jam and turned the engine off, the traffic restarted but the car didn't...this sounding familiar? lol . Anyway the fuzz were there and gave me a push so i could bump it, and I had the engine off lol. Its a good way to remember :D

lol. Hopefully it’ll start then I can go to my mates garage and get a starter motor. It’s £64 on eBay don’t know how much to fit though. I reckon there is a bad ground somewhere but I can’t figure it out. Since I’ve had the car the lights behind the buttons on the radio don’t turn off but the radio screen goes off with the key so I replaced the radio and after 1 day it done it again (it’s the factory radio) and the Trip Display illuminates but doesn’t show anything. Also both headlights have flicked off then on but it’s only happened once whilst driving.

Just a quick update. I bump started it successfully but immediately had a constant squeaking noise then allot of smoke under bonnet. It smelled like rubber but kind of electrical also. The belt looks fine.

Bravo! All Punto fun lol

If you're lucky it'll now be fine. Might need running for half an hour to charge the battery.

Possibly the fan belt has water on it making it slip, probably nothing to worry about. It'll dry up.
