Hello guys,

Sorry I have trawled through alot of the other similar questions and I cannot make head or tale about 500 servicing, kind of confused!

I purchased my beloved 500 in June 2009, I had a low mileage service (9k) in Sept 10. Does that mean my servicing warning light will come on in June or will it be in Sept?

When do I get my next service done? If so how much do you reckon I will pay?

I am also thinking about going down the route of ordering the parts myself and taking them with me to the garage.

Next service 12 months after the last one (I see you're doing less than 18k a year) which would be September 2011. The light wouldn't come on before then.
Price the parts up and get the dealer to match it.

If you use the "menu" and scroll through to the "service" bit you will see how many miles are left before the next service is due. Whether this is correct will be down to whether the tech reset it back to 18000 after the service. It doesn't work on time/dates so if you don't do the miles you will need to make that decision to book it in for an annual service yourself.

ps. If you have optioned for a low mileage 1st service then you can't have another low mileage one again next time, you need to have had a full service in between low mileage services.

I have just been to have a look at the date the service is due and it flashes up at 14316, so I take it then that after my first low mileage service they did not reset the service interval? Or does it mean I have got 14316 miles until my next service?

Confused? me too!

Obviously they did reset it as you'd done 9k miles at the first service so it would at least read less than 9k miles. Anyway, your car needs to be serviced at 18k miles, what mileage has it done now?

As maxi says it must have been reset so going on the figures you have given you have done 3684 miles since the last service. The figure in the display is a "count down" and when it gets down to a certain figure it should then flash a warning message to say that a service is due.

Most people never see the message as they don't travel that sort of mileage and therefore the service gets done well inside the 18000 mile limit.

Thanks for that Grimwau, will I be seeing you at Beaulieu at the end of the month?

I have been reading my post this morning and I have come across a letter from my garage offering a 'Free Summer Check' which consists of the following:

Engine Oil
Brake Fluid
Coolant
Power Steering circuit
Front and rear screen washer
Side, number plate, indicators, hazard, dipped, main, reverse, stoplight and fog light
Front and rear wipers
Condition of front and rear shocks
Tyre wear and condition
Tyre pressures
Exhaust system
Condition of braking system and drive shafts.

They will then provide me with a full report on how the inspection went, now I am not a cinic, but you dont get anything in life for free, what are the pro's and cons of this do you think?

All they'll do is check that things are still physically attached to the car or the levels. They won't actually fix anything or top anything up. The reason they offer these checks is so that if for instance your brake pads are worn, then they can charge you to put new pads in.

I wish I could be there but I'l be on holiday from 14/05/11 to 30/05/11. I'm hoping that I can arrange (with yellowluigi) another get together for this summer.(y)

I had one of these done when my car when in to sort out a rattle, I didn't know it was going to be done and there were no recommendations for anything needing to be replaced/changed.

The way I look at it is that it is an extra piece of paper to go with the cars service history. (y)

Obviously a quiet time in the service department and they want to drum up a little business - which you might well do yourself (such as screenwash, wipers, tyre pressures) or much more cheaply through an independent without affecting your vehicle's warranty (such as brakes).

What did they do for the £190?

I'm curious too - as mine is booked in for this Thur's am - [30th], and they've quoted me pretty much the same price [that will include pollen filter and new plugs definitely]. Should the pollen filter be OK that'll be £20 knocked off [Not that I expect it].

LOL, points? This isn't 1890 you know! :)

My feeling is that you're probably getting oil, an oil filter, some plugs and maybe a pollen filter for that. For an extra £70 I got the tappets done (quite a job), the brake fluid changed and all the filters done. Plus they went around the car and lubricated bits that needed lubrication and put a waxy sort of coating on bits that can rust :)

Just paid £190 - the brake fluid was tested and was OK so didn't need changing.

Haven't got the bill with me but as far as I can remember - new oil filter & oil, 4 x plugs, pollen filter, check brake pads & discs, clean a lubricate all hinges / catches, check / adjust drive belts, check & top up fluids. I was told that a Pop without air-con would be £20.00 cheaper?

The car has only done 14000 miles so tappets didn't need attention, but front brake pads are 70% worn so will need changing before long. I think I'll take your tip about next day brakes and get them fitted by a local garage.

Also included a hand-wash and vacuum and a free courtesy car (a brand new Panda). I could probably have got it a little cheaper but the garage is less than 2 miles from my home.

Yes exactly why service the car every year if you barely drive it? 30,000 km per service sounds good to me. Worst case service the car every 2 years minimum.

A lot of engine wear happens on start up so for someone doing short stop/start journeys with low mileage is 'worse' and it would be more benefical if it had an oil change at least once a year.

Some cars e.g. the Beamers have variable service intervals for this reason with it not been based on mileage alone.
