An old cornish shanty... Bringing along quite a few extras.
Widicombe on the Moor as in Dartmoor in Devon. So many miles from Cornwall.:) I would sing it to you if I could sing.
Tom Pearce, Tom Pearce lend me your grey mare ............

"Widecombe Fair", also called "Tom Pearce" (sometimes spelt "Tam Pierce"), is a Devon folk song about a man called Tom Pearce, whose horse dies after someone borrows it to travel to the fair in Widecombe with his friends.[1] Its chorus ends with a long list of the people travelling to the fair: "Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davy, Dan'l Whiddon, Harry Hawke, Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all." Some research suggests that the names originally referred to real people.[2]

As the last name in a long list, "Uncle Tom Cobley and all" has come to be used as a humorous colloquialism meaning "anyone and everyone".

Thanks for correcting me.

From over here, (and to be honest increasingly here), there appears to have only ever been a fag paper between blue and red…
According to Diaper Don, he and Couch Boy along with Apartheid Clyde, got a mandate to run amok. Math isn't their long suit because winning the popular vote by 1.9% isn't a mandate. And it sounds like a paper thin difference between red and blue, but over a third of the voting age population did not vote. Either because they could not stomach a black woman as President, felt their vote didn't matter, or couldn't be bothered. There were a few third party votes cast but those can be seen as a vote for the Cockwomble.

One big problem right now is misinformation from most US news outlets because they are owned by the Mongo Mussolini's puppet masters. I only use one US based news source, NPR, because it's publicly owned. And I cross-reference that with The Guardian, BBC, and Canada's Globe and Mail. Another problem is the MAGA base sees the Manchild as their Savior that will protect them from women, gays, black and brown skinned people, and the bogeyman of the month. God forbid, you point out his lies and weaknesses, cuz does iz fightin' words to them.

Both my daughters have flames shooting from their eyes right now. My youngest is a systems analyst, fraud investigator, and a Certified Public Accountant. She's going nuts because what F'Elon is finding is not fraud. A financial audit, done properly, takes months, if not years, to complete. What he's claiming he and is hackers have found was stuff that was already uncovered and dealt with. My oldest is expecting her job to be eliminated as a "DEI" hire. She was hired because she was the only one qualified for the position. Her salary is paid by Federal Grant Money and those have been frozen 'for review'.

I am in "Told Ya So" mode with many acquaintances who voted for the Hamburgler and have been personally affected by the funding cuts and shutdowns of many Government agencies. Shutting down USAID has hamstrung most of the country's farmers, as have the deportations. Cue World's Smallest Violin.

And Panda Nut-I doubt he'll survive that long. He's just a windbag causing chaos to hide what's going on behind the scenes. He'll be replaced by Couch Boy as another puppet. You might get $500, though.

Whew! Rant over.

Its pretty frighening here with the Russian thing going on too close for comfort, and with the tribe of loonies making violent chnages to the balance of power anything could happen. One can but hope he becomes sick and is rendered nearly inert, just enough life to stop his side kicks getting total control. Its a roug situation and Im counting down the days till someone else gets elected, if he actually stands aside which I reckon he won't. Its a very very sad world we live in at present. If we get through the next five years without a major war developing we will be lucky.

This thing about claiming a mandate/overwhelming majority is something we run into over here too. "First past the post" has a lot to answer for!

Misinformation from news sources? It's absolutely running riot these days isn't it? I tend not to really believe anything unless it's supported from several sources and, more importantly, seems credible to me. I used to trust the beeb without thinking about it but not so much now - there's definitely an element of social influencing/brain washing going on in the way they conduct themselves these days. I miss the US news channels and Al Jazeera on free to air, not that I believed everything they commented on but their different takes on things helped to balance things out.

I agree with you. I think things are as dangerously unpredictable as at any time in my life so far - including the Cuba nuclear crisis. We, the west but without the US at our backs, are not ready to fight the powers in the east. I'm afraid it'll all go to hell if major hostilities break out. What's happening in Ukraine makes me sick to my stomach and fills me with despair for humanity. I'll not even get started on what's happening in the eastern med.

Sadly me too.

This. So much.

The news has always had its bias, no doubt. But in the last decade and a bit since I've been following things... the rise of social media and misinformation has if anything, only further lowered the standards of our usual newspapers / news channels in order to try and compete. Then, we all know the **** show that social media has devolved into in the last five years especially.

It is scary because if you asked me... I genuinely couldn't say what the solution to the problem is. Block and control more.... or open and allow more?

Scary the influence that these things have.

its no longer worth spending time on, and depresses me so badly I know its health damaging. As Jock says you have to compare and cross reference to get any measure of things. And that moron Trump just makes things so much worse. Maybe Putin will kill him at the party. Heres hoping.

I do try to avoid it myself, more so after the pandemic. News and social media. I'll hear about some topics now... and I'll go myself and seek out the full, unedited speech or press conference.

To be honest, I do that with everything now. Phones.. cars.. Some sort of new comes out. I don't want some editor at AutoExpress's version, I don't want some online tech nerd who loves or hates a brand telling me what they think - I go straight to source. Read the press release or watch the event. See it for myself and perhaps then get bogged down in the comments and opinion if I need to bounce my own thoughts against others.

Sometimes discussion and opinion / experience and bias can be useful, helpful and fun - hence why we enjoy this forum and others like it. But definitely serves to only depress, anger and divide us when it comes to modern social media and "news". Sad times indeed.

I have a dog in the fight in Ukraine. My wife's sister adopted three orphaned girls from Kyiv in the early nineties. Two of them still call me Unka Mike. Let's just say the third has been a disappointment. The oldest still has family in Kyiv. She went back to visit a few years ago, before the SHTF, and brought me back some Ural parts. She's held in high esteem by me. ;)

Other than the AP and NPR, other US News sources have their noses so far up The Cheeto's backside that it isn't funny. The misinformation can be traced back to Ronnie Ray Guns revoking the Fairness Doctrine, which limited bias in the news. Basically, for every editorial a newspaper or TV news presented, there had to be a rebuttal also presented. It helped get both sides of the story. The revocation allowed pus buckets like Fox News, Newsmax, OAN, and talk shows like Rush Limbaugh, Info Wars, and Joe Rogan on the right; and MSNBC, VOX, Democracy Now on the right.
For the folks in very rural areas, Murdoch's Fox News, aka Faux News, is all that's available to them, so they swallow it hook, line, and sinker. Fox has a **** ton of lawsuits against it for telling lies about rigged voting machines in the 2020 election. They had to admit they lied and shelled out 787 million dollars to the company that built the machines. They still haven't reported it. If you point that out to Fox followers, they call you a liar and may take a swing.

As far as the BBC on this side of the pond, I've actually had to go to them for local reporting. While sitting in a Florida airport, I learned about a tornado devastating a small town west of where I lived. US sources had NADA. The BBC was on the ground in what was left of Fairfield, Illinois.

The words Fox and news cant really be used together in s sensible converstation lol

The B. B. C love sending reporters en masse to the furthest places away from the UK for the tiniest of reasons and always have more than 1 on site. It becomes funny its so over the top at times. The only thing that betters a tornado in Fairfield involves the death of a Royal person, at which point they totally loose control. They are still above average so we dont complain too much.

I've been a fan of the BBC since I was a little kid with a shortwave radio. NPR, National Public Radio, will usually run BBC World News in the mornings, after NPR's Morning Edition.

And PN, those other news organizations I mentioned are like Fox News on steroids. It's not about facts, it's about ratings.

Where I disagree with them is the way they close ranks regarding the habits of certain DJs, News Broadcasters and other "Celebrities" to the detriment of the public allowing things to go on unchecked for many years.:(

Yes I agree with you. And they persist in using these flawed people in spite of its being so clear there are things wrong. Anyone with a spine would stand up and sack the. The money they are paid there are loads pf people who could and should replace them. Back to my pet hobby horse about managers managing, taking responsibility, and being held accountable all of which seems to be more or less totally lacking in this outfit. Closing ranks I suppose is seen everywhere. It doesn't make it less despicable. If people did a better job they could be honest and open and wouldnt need to close ranks to cover incompetance, and shoddy and criminal behaviour!
