What are you listening to right now?

I've just had a listen to Kiling Joke, 1919 and Senseless Things (grunge). They're all cool. Its odd watching live videos from "The Word", tv show.

The music recommends in this thread are taking me back into my own personal time capsule :)

Thanks for the tips lads, love it:D

Television I have a couple of songs, Friction & See No Evil, but I don't know much else, will give em a shufti :)

The Clash & Stranglers I love, of course I wanted to be in a band, but could only play bass really badly so it had to be a punk band where playing badly is a virtue :)

Some great unknowns for me on there, Porta, I've got some research to do!

To save you trawling through their back catalogues Anthony if I had to choose one song for each it would be:
Senseless Things - Too Much Kissing
The Family Cat - Prog One (nice song about a horse? I think?)
Mega City Four - Words That Say
Bivouac - And Then She Ate
Daisy Chainsaw - Love Your Money
Eat - Stories
Stereolab - Captain Easychord

I suppose Electronic Dance Music has overtaken rock as the dominant force in alternative music, but there's still some good stuff. Black Lips & Black Rebel Motorcycle Club? You need to have black in the name now it seems. Apart from White Denim :D

Not being able to play bass is a virtue???
JJ Burnell, Simon Gallup, Youth, are all excellent bassists, there’s also brilliant guitarists, drummers and keyboardists. T nine honest, I hate the ‘shouty shouty, deliberately bad’ types of punk like antinowhere league and Oi, but there’s plenty of that nonsense in thrash metal and the like…I was also reminded of Leeds bands, as that’s where I hail from, Gang of Four, Bridewell Taxis, Red lorry Yellow Lorry, March Violets. There’s a lot really and Leeds shouldn’t be remembered for the Goth Scene

I've finished scratching with my gearbox for the morning...so i put on some Thin Lizzy, gotta love the guitars!

I lived in Leeds for a year or two, in Kirkstall. I go back occasionally. I miss the Harvard Mills shop.

I'm struggling to remember the name of the live music venue near/under the railway.

Thin Lizzy were great, born & bred Leeds so knew all the places for good music
Brannigans, Phono, Warehouse, Scrumpies, Cinderella’s (on certain nights) Faversham, Chocolate Factory, Duchess, the eagle, Fenton, Duck & Drake, Wendy House, Cockpit, there’s many more I’ve forgotten… we were once in the regent, smallish pub but it did gigs and folk went and jammed, Brenda’s Crocker was playing a small acoustic set and, really off the wall, Mark Knopfler walked in and was persuaded by Brendan to join him…all for about £2 quid

Nice memories there for sure!

I've remembered the name of the venue i used to go to, Cockpit, i think it closed down, was small and fun in there!

Yes, the cockpit was the second in a chain (from Bradford)…it wasn’t as well controlled as the Bradford one and began to attract an element that the resident crowd didn’t like, so voted with their feet

I never said we were a good punk band! :D
Going for the deliberately shambolic energy of Mudhoney or The Replacements.

Level 42 level bass solos or funk slap bass not welcome. Which suited me:)

I blame Nirvana (as with most things) for convincing a generation of substandard bass players all you need to do is play a couple of notes every now and then (guilty).

Yup... lots in the past 18 months after grabbing a used but new Technics SL1500C in retro silver.
As the technology faded in the 80s and 90s I'd never have thought it would come back.

For me it's as much about the after dinner chat about the music, as it is listening to the music. Chatting about music is interesting, in person, or in this thread.

I've been in the hifi repair business for the past 40 years , and have seen many many formats fade away , MD, VHS, Beta, LP, DCC (remember those?!)
I actually still repair MD (have to find donor's for some) as it's a damn good format

As for vinyl I had a SL1210 back in the day (when they were a mere £250 new) , then stupidly sold it and downsized my vinyl as we all got swept away into CD etc

I thought Mini Disc was going to be the next big thing and bought a player/recorder. But not enough music was released for the format and i moved on.

I occasionally go to a vinyl record shop for a browse, its interesting to have a look in person, rather than see a swathe of online LPs via ebay or Amazon.

Well of course the pre-recorded side of MD was just a sideline, it's main feature was digital recording

Make your own mix discs etc

I recall i got the inspiration to buy a MD because i used to lisen to a talk radio channel and the producer would make his fun jingles with one and tell the audience all about it. I don't recall ever making jingles myself, i doubt i even had a PC back then.
