General Mk2 C20XE Seicento - The Rebuild

Well as there isn't a shell to mess around with, ive cracked on with the engine... I really want to get this done and ready as i hate having bits all over the place...

Ive honestly spent a serious amount of monies on all the new rings, bearings, gaskets etc.. I might log it all on here later for all the newbies that are new to engines & conversions, to show that their far from cheap to do...

I stripped the engine down, and took it down to my fave machine shop... I know the chap quite well, and he done the work 'off the books'...

I had the following done for £85....

Full head skim, helicoil in two plug holes & acid dip.

Bottom end Honed & acid dipped....

He also got it done in a fast turnaround (under 24 hours)... However im not 100% happy with it, as i dont think he noticed an issue i had with it due to it sitting....

The engine was sat outdoors in the rain (no bonnet on the car, and a cracked inlet)... This caused one of the bores to fill with water, and caused corrosion on the top of the piston, and also on the wall of one of the bores.

I was under the impression with a good hone, this would have removed the 'extra' layer on the bore itself.. However the hone hasnt done anything, so this is around .5mm heigher than the standard wall of the bore...

I really dont want to run it like this as i dont want to damage the top ring on the piston... He says it should be fine due to the second compression ring being under this mark, but after spending around £500 on the rebuild, not including the engine itself, id rather not chance it...

I was thinking sitting with some wire wool trying to clean it off, and then getting that one bore re-honed... however i dont know if this is a safe thing to do?

Anyone got any ideas... Ive been told its fine, but im not so sure.

Difficult to tell from photos. Can you feel/measure the lip? Comparator guage or old ring poked up the bore with a piston, measure the gap?

Surprised the hone didn't get it.

The Vaux tweakers (SMB?) or Guy Croft may have ideas.

I can feel the pip yea, its above the actual bore, so if i could remove it safely, i wouldnt damage the correct bore size for the rings.

Il have a look at it and see if its pitted, if not il give it a mash with some fine wire wool... Fingers corssed lol :)

Hmm pretty pants situation to be honest.. Ive wire wooled it, and cleaned it up a bit... Took a lot of the lip & corrision off, but sadly the bores pitted a bit..

Ive had a google, and have come across people with pitted bores that seem to be okay, and others who say their getting running problems... Not sure really what to do now to move forward with it...

The old piston & rings are too tight to get back in the bore without the compressor, so i think new rings would be okay... but is it too much of a risk?

I know its probably no use to you what so ever, but a friend of a friend (of a friend of a friend) was selling her Cinque for £100 (less than the scrap value  ) because it failed the MOT and the clutch went on the way home from the test centre.
If your interested Ill chase it up for you?
Cheers
Tom

Cheers, with no MOT it will be an issue getting it back as i need to straight bar it.. Plus id rather have a bit of ticket on at least...

:)

The block has P*ssed me off a fair bit, and was in super good condition with regards to wear.. its only the bloody water from the rain thats destroyed it!! Grr... Anyhow, i guess i need to look about for another bottom end, or see if the 1.8 vauxhall one is the same, and get it rebored to take my pistons... thus giving a perfect cylinder... as going for an oversize isnt really an option now, due to the cost of xmas...

Anyways, enough of the negativity... Here are some other bits ive been getting ready for the sei (and just to add, i may have found a local one... £350...broom yellow lol)...

Most of the alloy has turned up for the inlet manifold... My Mr's dads tig welding it apparently at work (honda) so should turn out quite good... However as long as it works i couldnt care what it looks like lol...

The silicone tube is ready to cut down to attatch between the manifold and carbs :D

Ive also bought a choke cable, so i can actually use the choke thats on the carbs, which stops issues with the bloody cold mornings in jan & feb, when i hopefully have this on the road for... (engine block depending lol)...

Also as you can see, i have some slightly large, but better engine mounts from a VW of some sort... For the pair i paid around £20.. which is a lot cheaper than some standard ones im sure... They have 3 holes in the top, which are threaded, meaning i can hopefully drill the seicento chassis, and bolt through via a welded strengthening plate. Should make the custom mounts fairly easy to make... (famous last words....)

Ive also got my AEM lambda sensor... Great bit of kit!! This ones brand new, and for my xmas from the other half!! I had one in my fiesta turbo, and i couldnt live without the thing, was great to get the fuelling correct, and more importantly... it lit up, flashed and said the word 'POO'!!! Anyway, ive stolen the boss to weld into the downpipe from the box so im not waiting till xmas for it :p

Finally, ive sorted out the plumbing for my bike carbs. (thanks to copying my mates set up thats been removed from his ford zetec). I now know where all the pipes go.. there are two breathers, a pipe in and out for water, and then a single petrol feed... I still need to either buy a bike fuel pump, or a facet solid state pump... I also managed to track down some trumpets from a bike, as you can see in the pic... These need a little adapting, and some holes filling... But i think it will be worthwhile :p

Can anyone point me in the right direction with regards to a MPI seicento?

If i was to buy one with an in-tank pump... would it be possible to remove the pump... and then just have a bit of petrol pipe in its place (with a bit of gauze or something to stop the crud)... into the bottom of the tank?

Would the bike pump suck the fuel??

Or does anyone have an idea of how i could get around it, without swapping the fuel tank?

The sei im looking at is a 2000 sporting

Depends, I think, on the pump from the bike. In principle you could just pull the pump and run a line through a new cover plate. In practice, I'm unsure of whether the new pump will need a gravity feed. Some eggsperimentation is called for before fitting............

2000 Sporting may be SPI (was the chageover year) which would make things easier if you have to use some kind of header tank as SPI has plumbed in return.

Cheers all... I used one of these in my turbo fiesta to feed my swirl pot.. Im sure this dragged fairly well so might be okay for my carbs... Need to find out what psi my carbs are tho....

As for today, im off work with 'man flu' lol... so im off around the scrap yards to see if i can find another bottom end for my engine... Might take todger as im sure hes in need of a few bits for his...

Although the post woman has delivered some gifts to rub insult into injury!! .. bloody bottom end parts :(

Grr!!

Also cleaning some valves... Electrical cable markers have came in good with these... aids returing the same valves in their guides :p
