Technical Engine oil

I use the cheapest oil that meets the specification.
With older and simpler engines I'd be very happy to do this. However where the current small turboed engines are concerned I prefer to use the oil specified by the manufacturer because they need all the "help" they can get to survive.

Some modern engines do not survive even if the car is regularly serviced using the correct oil.

A non-VVT 1.2 FIRE will likely be just fine for at least 200k on practically anything that can be legally sold as engine oil.

Progress...

The whole point of putting fully synthetic in is the extended service intervals
There are other benefits, but none you'll see on a 1.1 or 1.2. Higher performance and turbo engines see a benefit as the oil doesn't carry the carbon as soot up as much.

My air cooled 900cc 8 valve 4 cylinder bike made 90bhp at 8,500 rpm. The gearbox uses the same oil and it’s a wet clutch. Basically the oil gets a lot of stick. I used diesel spec Semi-synth 10-40 oil as it met the Japanese JASO MA standard.
When the valve clearances were checked there was no measurable wear and the engine was really clean inside.
Oil changes were every 6000 miles. Pretty fair considering what had to do.

So don’t dis the semi synth. It’s fine for reasonably high performance engines (approx 100bhp per litre in my case). The Fiat 1.2 60 will be fine with 10,000 mile but if it’s mostly doing school runs, 6000 miles would be better.
