Hi, I have an oil pressure light, trying to see if it is related to the below before taking it anywhere, tried looking for info/diagrams to get this info but no luck so hopefully someone can help me here if that's alright.

It has had an issue with the breather pipe years ago and I wonder if it could be this again, picture attached it looks like there might be a hole? The area is covered in oil but that may be from before.

Also, I think there is a cap missing on this nozzle (circled red), is that right and could it be related/what is it and can I get a new cap for it?

Oil level is fine, light stayed on for most of the rest of the drive yesterday, going off once briefly and then coming back on again. I think I can hear a hissing sound when the engine is on. Not turning it on again however.

Oil pressure switch is next to the oil filter, low front left if you are looking from the front of the car, not in your photos

Check if it's weeping, if it is, it's highly likely the switch just need replacing

If you have a multimeter

There's only one wire which should measure 5V disconnect, ignition on

between the end of the sensor with the connector removed and the engine block, it should measure close to zero ohms with the engine off and open circuit with the engine idling

Is this a problem of the light being on all the time, or glimmering or flashing? Did it start suddenly . Does it just take longer to go out. Can we assume it is full of oil? And that the oil is good?

As Varesacrazy has said its pretty oily, but I giuess its got quite a few miles under its belt. These things have a very crude oil breather system on the crank case and a lot of oil vapour (and water) comes out and up the breather pipe it goes bacl into the air intake and often causes problems wiht oiling the MAP sensor in the inlet manifold. In my experience they vary a lot we have 1 really clean one and one pretty oily one. Both are low milage. If the breather pipe comes adrift it sprays a fine mist over the area in question. There are 2 breather pipes attachd under th airbox the thin one (mysteriously known as the big breather pipe because its long) and a shorter fatter hose. The littlem one push fits onto a spiggot inder the airbox and the bogger one likewise bust should be clamped to its position. The clamp is nearly always removed early in life by lazy people.... This tends to lead to the oily mess and sometimes the pipe comes off and you get a lot of oil and smell in the cabin. These htings do not affect the oil light but I would clean that area up as it will improve in car air quality. I use carb cleaner and then wash carefully with the engine running. Dont soak the ECU and avoid electrics where possible. Shield things where you can as you go.

If removing the airbox I undo the engine end of the big pipe and remove it with the airbox. Be very gentle when removing the long thin pipe as its easy to break that spiggot.

The oil presure switch is fixed into the oil filter housing front of the engine and a damaged or broken wire is possible. It may be the sensor which is easily addressed.

A worn oil pump more often leads to flickering oil light at tickover.
Broken oil pickup tends to be flashing light on and off at all times and speeds.
Even a very worn engine should get enough oil pressure to turn the light off as the car gets going but may flash on changing gear if really bad.

The oil pressure sensor sounds most likely to be the cause. It does need to be resolved immediately for obvious resons.

Regarding the missing cap. Yes, as mentioned by Varesecrazy above, it's the take off point for monitoring fuel rail pressure and the cap simply keeps dirt from getting in so if you can find one from a scrap car or maybe on line it would be good to get one - in the meantime a bit of tape wrapped round it wouldn't hurt.

Now, the oil light behaving as it is. Does the engine sound any different to how it has before? For the oil pressure in the engine to be low enough for the light to come on it's likely that you'll hear the big ends knocking especially if you've been driving it around with the light on for any length of time. This would sound like a rapid knocking noise especially when the engine is pulling or if you give it a rev up when standing still. I think it's more likely to be a faulty pressure switch. It's beside the oil filter and easy enough to replace with a new one. Again, as Varesecrazy says above, check the switch for leaks as I've seen this often and, if so, a new switch will sort it.

Lots of good advice, as usual, from Panda Nut and koalar too. Our 1.2 Panda was leaking oil from the breather pipe and making a mess just like that. I put a jubilee type clip on it which solved the problem for a while but the pipe was old and brittle and putting the clip on it just caused it to split after a wee while. Bought a new pipe from Shop4parts and it's been fine ever since.

By the way Charlie, I've been meaning to ask for a while, Where does Varesecrazy come from? Sorry if that sounds "nosey" but I just can't resist asking as it's not a word that makes any sense to me.

Hes mad about Italy I believe. Rightly so I wish I could live there.

Thanks all this info is very helpful, @The Panda Nut the light is on on ignition and remains on when engine starts, it started mid-drive yesterday evening and remained on, except for one moment, until it got back home.

The oil pressure switch looks very very slick, @koalar I don't have a multimeter but I will get my hands on one thanks. Sounds like agreement about sensor being the issue.

@Pugglt Auld Jock in the seat I heard no difference at all and under the bonnet I may have heard a hissing noise but it was faint if at all. Certainly I will get a breather pipe as looking closer it is rather cracked.

Thanks very much!

You are welcome. Does sound like a sensor or sensor wire issue.

Sounding very like the switch I would guess.
Hes mad about Italy I believe. Rightly so I wish I could live there.
And so say I. I used to go there when I worked for Firestone - Monza most memorably - but Mrs J and I have also had some memorable holidays around the lakes - Oh, and a most memorable visit to the Mille Miglia Museum just outside Brescia. I'd very happily live anywhere around there.

Can't be a broken wire, the light would not come on

Can't be an earth cable problem as that has the
opposite effect of switching the light off happens

The oil pressure switch looks very very slick

If there's oil on the end of the switch, it needs changing anyway, they only go worse never better

It almost certainly the problem

Around £5-10 and if you live near a large town you can probably pick one up today

we can reassess the problem latter if needed

While your there check the bottom of the sump, a small dint can cause problem

It's probably a 21mm spanner size

I have 466545149 as the product code, ERA oil pressure switch, seems out of stock online but I'll keep looking. Good to know it is likely safe to drive however in case I need to pick one up.

I use the fiat number in Google search

55202374 oil switch

But the switch is used by almost all manufacturers

Ford
Suzuki
Seat
Citroen

And so on

Which gives a lot of options as to where to buy it

The Ford KA uses the Panda and 500 engine 😉

I always like to use shop4parts to double check what was actually fitted, using the FIAT part numbers

It's a generic part, easy to find

Any motor factors and most dealers should stock
