Cinquecento Cinq Abarth Project 1.4 16v

Introduction

Its been a while since Team Lloyd did any projects, so yesterday we travelled miles to pick up this little gem!

Over the winter we hope to transform this cinq into possibly the first 1.4 16v with 6 speed gearbox, not sure if anyone has done it yet, altho have heard people thinking about it!

We now have the car and a brand new 1.4 16v engine and gearbox awaiting to be joined as one!

Thanks

Thanks arc, I gather then that using the 16v alternator and pulley is better because it means the tdc sensor doesn't need to be moved, but the mount needs modding to clear the belt (which is probably the easier thing to do). I've read most of the 16v conversion threads on here and plan to copy this one and use an Emerald ecu instead of stock.
My main concern is still with the loom and how to modify it from the SPI 8v to MPI 16v...

it is easy to alter the wiring, i built the loom on my car for the megasquirt ecu with ease.

there is an oil pump on some 1242 16vs that will let you use the 8v alternator and not have to mod anything else, like what kris uses - but not sure what engine / car that was off.

Not may updates, been busy with other stuff, like changing a ballast unit on the FTO neatly found on the underside of the headlamp unit which means front bumper off to get headlamp out!

Then new OE KYB Toyota gas dampers, Tein springs TRD top mounts so i can remove the awful for UK roads far too harsh TEIN coil-overs and new brake discs (315mm front and rear vented!) and pads all round on the GT4 while I am at it.

But the Cinq hasn't been forgotten about, we have bought 3 of the LSD's on the group buy, one earmarked for this car, maybe one in the Sei.

A set of 15" 5.5J Lancia Dedra turbo wheels so we can fit Toyo R888's in IIRC 165/45 15 same rolling radius as smaller wheels, but minimum side wall should be nice, and gives bigger brake options as do have a set of Lancia integrale EVO 4 pot Brembo's sat which fit inside 15" wheel since I upgraded to Porsche 911 (996) 4 pot mono-block Brembo's on the integrale, would be interesting to try but may be overkill and complicated as they are lug mount so not the easiest to adapt.

Also have a pair of Strada Abarth 130TC Recaro's, MOMO wheel and boss kit, pair of rear calipers mounting brackets.

Also Jon has been hard at work making an adaptor plate to suit the Ford throttle body we are using, its turning out very nice, get some pictures soon.

Been a while since we gave a progress report, quite a lot has happened with photos to follow over the next few days.

Firstly i've had my Lancia Dedra Turbo alloys refurbished in anthracite, just need to buy a set of Toyo R888's now!

The car has had its engine remove, and stripped out inside.
Seats, carpet, sound deadening, dash, rooflining, its all gone.
The front wishbones have been wire brushed and painted.

The rear axle is off and due to get powdercoated soon.

Next on the list is seam welding the shell and get a roll cage fitted.

Things are moving on, just down to time and money now!

Up to date photos will be posted asap!

Emma.

sweet:D i think the sparco cage is much better, im welding in a bar across the rear legs (like RC has done) to mount the harnesses on, im also beefing the door bars up alot once the welders fixed and i get some extra tubing

I have the 14" 6J Thema 16v wheels of the same design on my Cinq and they look good. They keep a nice standard look being from a car of similar age and origin. Yours will look really good in anthracite on your grey car.

James

The wheels are 15" 6J ET37 not 5.5J as said before.

And of course the most important bit was the front arms have had polybushes fitted, the real reason for removing (though I'd add that, Aaron)

Bit of an update, the Quaife LSD arrived last week so was fitted to the gearbox which in turn was fitted back to engine and now the engine and box have been fitted to the car.

Rear suspension has been put back on with old dampers and some Eibach springs we had so we can see what the anti-roll bar looks like and to see where to modify it further, the brackets will be remade and drop links moved up and bar will sit slightly higher now we know how much clearance we have to play with.

Also stuck some picks up of the short shift system, the gearstick will be shortened slightly which again will shorten the overall throw of the gearchange, but rather than just shorten to get a shorter shift, a pivot point was moved and this meant the cable is now sat in its own custom mount about 20mm higher than it was before, clearly shown in pictures, this decreases the thrown fore and aft by some margin, though will have no effect on side to side movement, but having the 6 speed box this is not really an issue as they are stacked fairly close so having some movement helps to prevent selecting the wrong gear, but again we needed to trial fit everything with a seat to see where it would fall, the steering column is also being dropped slightly, about 15-20mm in accordance with everything else.

Forgot to add for those wondering, the throttle body is a Ford one of unknown origin, but its pretty big and Jon has made a custom mounting plate to fit it to the Fiat inlet manifold, and an accelerator cable mount for it to sit in, the end is correct fitment for quadrant. the pedle movement is shorter than standard so may need to make a throttle stop for the pedal to ensure against stretching the cable.
