Scientists have engineered a new drug which makes you immune to the effects of nicotine, that is to say one injection will prevent you getting any pleasure from the nicotine for the rest of your life.

Many people cite the reason for not wanting to give up smoking as "I enjoy it" but if you took the nicotine hit away would you still smoke?

Would you have one injection to give up smoking?

It will be a while before its available but I suspect It is coming and sooner than you'll realise

Few years back we used it alot, now we use Varenicline (Champix) mainly now.

I do smoking cessation at work and I also do a lot of pharmaceutical work.

First I've heard about these injections and like most things on the NHS, they will only be available to the people who qualify for it and that's when (if) it NICE approve it and the PCTs agree.

There are some hilarious drugs out there I tell you now! :p

Indeed zyban was developed from anti depressants so could have some bad psycological side effects, there is also Varenicline (champix) which is another medication used to help quit smoking, however the effects of these drugs only work as long as you take the medication stop taking it and you can happily go back to smoking. both of these work on the brain

This new vaccine once taken (one injection) works for life and will permanently prevent you feeling the effects of nicotine. The side effects should be very similar to any other vaccine and as it doesn't work directly on the brain it shouldn't cause the problems of the above medications
