I know a lot of people choose for the Twinair because of the economical aspects of the car. My girlfriend however bought it because of the sheer driving pleasure the 2 cylinder car gives.

We took it for a 1400 mile road trip and drove a big part of the miles on the German Autobahn. Because the car had covered over 1500 miles we wanted to see what the car was capable of.

Almost 200 kilometers an hour on the dial, the blue en me TomTom said we where traveling around 194 kilometers an hour on the gps. A true magnificent little car!

That is quite good!
I only managed 195 on the 1.4 but i guess on a long hill it can go above 200.

So basically the twinair is almost as fast as the 1.4! If i didnt dislike turbo engines i would seriously consider it!

These equate to 124mph (indicated), 120.5mph (GPS verified).

I’m not at all surprised. My wife’s TA is loosening up nicely and just gets quicker and quicker as the miles roll on.

The gearing (ours is Dualogic) give a comfortable and relatively quiet 70mph at 3000rpm, but who can stick at that? 100+ is very easy and you can join in with the “big boys” (and girls) in the motorway fast lane. My average journey times, door to door, commuting 40 miles (50/50 motorway/London urban) in the TwinAir is no different to my own German 3 litre turbo diesel.

The twin cylinder so suits the character of the 500. This is an engine (like small Italian cars of old) designed to be revved.

Economy? Who’s really interested, when the car’s so much fun to thrash!!!

It's crazy how fiat only state the top speed as 108mph, ive got 115mph at 5200rpm on the dial. Started shaking at that speed so I eased off. But reckon i could have touched 125!

I suspect an indicated 115 is probably not far off 108. Were you on a flat stretch of road? Any wind?

Just remember that a speedo isn't 100% accurate and will always over read.

Well 120mph is amazing for such a small little car! 900cc !!!
Who needs an Abarth if the twinair can do that?

Mind you the brakes and handling ...didn't they all become a bit marginal at that type of speed? Also mpg would have been destroyed.

I've heard rumours that the Twinair engine will be fitted to the Alfa Mito soon.

Just remember that the speed is indicated, the real speed that the car is doing will be lower. Also, there's a turbo and multiair there so it's not your average 900cc engine
