guess a few of us have this issue? the wipers on all speeds are shuddering / sticking as they sweep over the window, any ideas what it is? more importantly what's the solution, as it's starting to get annoying!

Cheers

BTW does anyone with lefthand drive have this problem or is just a problem with righthand drive versions?

Hello, sorry to but in to the 500 section,

I'm interested to know if this could be the same as the issue on the Mk2 punto, stilo and panda. Have not had a chance to work on many 500's yet.

Do you get a "sparking" or relay sticking sound when the wipers are juddering, or is it simply the sound from the screen?

Many thanks,
Alan

 mine makes a juddering sound from the screen but I can also hear a faint tick when they move from what I assume is the fuse box..

with my car being in the states i couldn't get fiat wipers (the equivalent of halfords just laughed at me when I brought it in) but we found that the golf gti has the same wipers and we put them on and they don't judder at all

Weird but it worked

Mine used to do this, I stopped using any products whatsoever on the windscreen, and that included washing it without car bodywork shampoo, I just use water.

It has stopped the judder and they glide across the screen smoothly now. (y)

What Jim says I think could be the answer, the new Ford Ka which dont forget is a 500 underneath has the older style of wipers and not these flat bladed ones. I wonder if Ford knew about the juddering and insisted on the older type blades?

An old trick was to put some vinegar onto a kitchen towel and wipe the length of the blade where it touches the surface of the glass. This removes the build-up of road grease / dirt which often can cause judder. However I can't guarantee it'll work as it may as already mentioned the type of construction of the blade itself may be the culprit.

I believe there's a new generation of wiper blades being produced for vehicles that are designed to stop judder, but for the life of me I can't remember where I read that, probably AutoExpress.

My wife has a Golf GTi, I have asked if I can try her wipers, she was quite rude in response, but mine don't judder in the first place, otherwise I could have tried a real scientific experiment to back up Jim's findings.....

Clean the screen with vinegar too.

Its not just for chips, as a lot of our wegian friends would believe.

I asked in the Car Care section if using a clay bar on a windscreen to clear the the traffic film would be OK and the answer was a resounding ... Yes. Well, ... two people said yes so I'm going to give it a go although, to be fair, my wipers are pretty good and only judder very slightly in certain conditions.

I have a 15 year old Fiat Punto MK2 Sporting owned from new and had this juddering issue for as long as I can remember - so probably at least 10+ years - over the years tried all sort of things like RainX, New Wiper Blades, etc

I just kind of learned to live with it but few weeks ago was caught in such heavy rain on the motorway and almost had a crash when some idiot in a range rover over took me and pulled back into the lane infront of me really closely whilst it was still raining and him and his 4x4 tyres sent so much water into my windscreen at motorway speed couldn't see anything for a few seconds.

So I finally decided to make sure everything about my wiper was in perfect order. I never had a problem at the fast settings on the wipers, only the slowest setting, or during a single swipe.

Anyway my problem was that it would swipe once fine but on the return it would judder at the slower speeds.

I finally solved the problem and am so pleased.

The problem is inside the windscreen motor. The electric contacts that make the wipers turn are in a circle and grease from the gears gets on to the circle and coats the contacts in grease, which means they no longer make a good electrical connection. That is the reason you get the judder because the contact are constantly making and breaking the connection.

You have to open up just the part of the motor where the connections go and wipe away the excess grease and clean the grease off the contacts and then it works perfectly.
