I have a 2004 2.8JTD Fiat motorhome. With the engine running I turn the wheels full lock to either the right or left I get a knocking noise that appears to come from the steering rack. My local garage replaced the hydraulic steering pump but the noise is still there! They now say it might be the steering rack which will cost £200 to replace. Any ideas what the cause may be? If I drive a couple of miles, stop, and turn the steering hard to the left or right the noise is not there!

Strut bearings are woeful in the ducato and can give you a knocking noise as they get stuck. Usually the symptom of this is that the van steers slightly to the left or the right after a hard turn.

If you're aure its the rack 200 quid sounds reasonable. You may be able to source a cheaper rack on ebay and DIY.

I mentioned that to the mechanic but he said that he had checked them and they were fine.

For any one who is stumped with this try the following.

If it knocks when stationary or at slow speeds on full lock it is your timing belt tensioner. The steering belt pump puts strain on the belt and i whips back and forth making a loud cracking noise.

I have just done two of these in the past month.

I could upload a video showing the belt knocking if you message me on UK 07797846685

regards
