General Soft Paint?

General Soft Paint?

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but mine has got pretty bad, just like stated above it seems the paint is litterally just coming off. Every *metal* panel is affected (even the boot), whilst the front and rear bumpers remain perfect.

Would be keen to hear other experiences.

Thanks

It seems to be pot luck. My red 100HP which comes from the same factory is perfect. I'm soon to be changing to a Mito. The biggest problem with Mitos seems to be paint chipping, so much so that Alfa red has actually been withdrawn. I'm going for white.

In the 1990's most red alfa 155/164s went a kind of Alfa pink within a few years if not garaged in the heat:eek:. (my 1994 white one retained its colour fine until 2 years ago, when the 500 replaced it) I've manage to keep my old Junior a very nice deep shade of Rosso, but I think that was lucky enough to have been resprayed in two pack about 1990.

47,000 miles on my sparkly black painted 500. 30 miles of motorway driving a day. Tons of stone chips. I just assumed it was normal.

JJ I'm completely with you. I've been driving my beautiful Bosa Nova White 500 for 4 weeks and handwashing every week, and every week there are more stone chips. I've also fot a repair job to do on passenger door where it was opened onto a wall and it has literally taken all the paint off ... even the undercoat.

I love the car but can't help thinking this really isn't acceptable. The paint is so thin .. I'm on here to see what I can do to protect the paintowrk a bit more .. and find out how to use a touch up pen I am going to have to buy this afternoon.

Love the car - not the paintowrk. I almost want to wrap her in bubble-wrap!

Me too! 34K on the clock and stone chips all over her. I'd thought this was odd - I've owned Fiesta's, Micra's, Peugeot's and never experienced anything like this.

I've a friend who does up VW's and he got the bloke he uses to do the re-sprays for him to look at her for me. He told me to approach Fiat about it (as well as the allow wheel centres which are also peeling off) as in his experienced eyes the level of damage is completely unacceptable for a car that's still an 09 plate. He thinks that too long a time was left before the primer application and the paint application, which is why the paint doesn't adhere properly and chips straight off leaving the primer exposed.

Wish me luck, I'm going to my local dealership tomorrow. My worry is that even though I bought the 3rd yr warranty, they will say paint isn't covered. Or use the fact that I tried (and failed) to touch up some of the chips myself as an excuse.

The wheel centres are covered under a warranty. As for the stone chips, it depends on what you feel is a lot and it depends on how closely you follow behind other cars and what condition the roads are in :)

My old '08 black was peppered with stone chips from back roads. The newer pearlescent white is perfect probably because most of its miles have been around the city. I reckon its also less prone to chip marks - seems a better paint job. Maybe its worth the excessive £700 paint job after all ?

Yup

Noddi is on a 10 plate, just topped 30,000 miles and the front/bonnet is peppered with chips. Plus (self inflicted) :bang: slammed the door shut with the seat belt not properly out of the way, now has a nasty 'gash' on the bottom doorsill. My job is changing which should result in less miles, so I am thinking about getting the bonnet resprayed

Paso Doble Red, by the way.

I'm feeling a little concerned about this now! Has anyone with a 10 onwards plate got any stone chip problems on their 500?

If you drive in such a manner that means that lots of little stones are going to hit the front of your car then you will get chips.

I would agree with Maxi and not think about this. From posts that I have seen on a different section - if you're driving a lot of back roads front mudflaps might be worth putting on. If I remember right you were getting volare blue ? Of the ones that I have seen - these seemed to be fine.

Yep the volare blue - I do drive on back roads so will consider the mud flaps (can't remember whether my car has these but I don't have any problems with chips on my car which is a similar girly blue type colour). Haven't seen one yet up close to examine closely, but will inspect the white one in my work carpark later :)

The closer you get to the car in front the more chips you will get on the front. It's as simple as that.

I got a few chips last year as I accidentally overtook a gritting lorry - doh! Didn't realise as I was level with it that it wasn't a normal lorry - oops! Still, it's "only a car" and if I'm keeping it for 7 years then a few tiny chips isn't going to affect the value (especially as I have my super touch up pen from Chris @ Souls :) )
