General New Grande Panda

General New Grande Panda

I did see the Fiat CEO also talking this week about the engineering involved in producing a 4x4, it seems he wants a 4x4, though I am not sure if the platform has supported a 4x4 before.

It's slightly murky in that yes the Avenger 4xe exists..but technically that's not on the same platform.

Panda is on what is calls the Smart Car platform avenger is on CMP platform.

The origin of the Smart car platform is apparently a re-engineered lower cost version of the CMP. So it depends what has been changed between the 2 if the suspension pick up points etc remain the same you'd imagine you could fit the powered rear axle from the 4xe as long as they've maintained space for the battery.

Similar kind of bodge re-engineering as the Pug Hybrid4 system?

Hybrid 4 pugs are on a different platform again...emp 2 if memory serves and the new ones are STLA medium.

Just to demonstrate who clear cut things are in the group at present...

That would be a PSA CMP platform fitted with a Firefly and yet the Fiat 600 also on a CMP platform gets a puretech 🤣

Im looking strongly at the La Prima Hybrid, just hope the 1.2 engine is powerful enough. The 1.2 hybrid is not that strong on motorways, though it will go on forever!

We've got the last generation equivalent...1.2 T puretech none hybrid. In terms of performance they seem about similar i.e. 0-60 between 9-10 seconds.

Although the newer version with the pesky mods to make it not explode in an expensive manner are less powerful in BHP terms (99 Vs 108) the torque which is the defining characteristic of the engine remains unchanged at 151lb/ft and I seem to recall the electricity is worth 12bhp on top.

They seem to gear the Puretech long as peak torque is low so motorways have never bothered it..a friend assures me 95 miles an hour is about 3500rpm and it could hold that all day...of course they may change the gear ratios for the automatic dual clutch but usually they seem to gear them long.

A bit more info for you, plus you can look on Fiat Italy ‘configurator’ where it’s now live
They are actually going to do a 4x4 and a billy basic model, with real lights instead of LEDs

In concept yes, but in practice the emp2 and stla medium are far larger platforms and the electric part of all hybrid4 systems so far released is more powerful than all the powertrains released in the Panda (usually it's 200bhp petrol and 100bhp + of electric.)
Great for the environment then....

It's more unlikely they'll use the hybrid 4 system to create a Panda 4x4 as you'd end up with a 220bhp Panda 4x4 with chunk of the cabin occupied with a battery pack.

Given the way the old Panda 4x4 works i.e. not 4x4 unless you're spinning wheels to should be reasonably easy to fit small hub motors to the rear for a similar effect.

I think FIat planned to do another 4x4 but my money is on Stellantis abandoning it. It beats me why we need a powerful petrol engine AND electric motors in anything. A small petrol engine to get you hone and provide charging if you run out of range wouldbe good and could be complemented by elctric motors to give reasonable power to weight. Anything the size of a Panda doesnt need more than aroiund the 85hp of the last Panda. Its quite sprightly enough at that. I advocate shouting at the idiots that keep causing higher than necessary emissions (Stellantis etc) by fitting such power trains. Their environmental credientials stink and are off the bottom of the scale. I hope they will be held to account for it one day. Perhaps the displaced Aussies will beat the **** out of them until they eventually get the message that we need to change. I for one will not be buying anything that doesnt at least now take account of and consider the issues that face us all. We don't need more power we dont need heavier and we certainly dont need bigger. Rant over (for now).

It's not particularly Stellantis or any manufacturers fault that one, systems like hybrid 4 were a response to company car tax rules.

Basically they allow you to claim your car does 330mpg or whatever on the official cycle because you can claim a portion of it as zero emissions. It all started with the Prius and went from there so we've got a lot of petrol cars that can do about 30-40ish mpg...but officially have mpg in the 100s.

It's similar to when everyone built diesels that claimed 72mpg and did 40mpg but only the test was taken into account for taxation purposes.

The same rules now penalise everything except BEVs...so that's what they will move to unless the rules get changed.

Must say the cheaper ‘Red’ model looks good with those cream steelies - very like the original Panda Sisley I had (1988?). I loved that car (it had the cool-but-ridiculous twin inclinometer binnacle atop the dash 😊).

However, I was shocked at the size of the Citroen E-C3 (same platform) when I popped into my local dealer last week - it seemed enormous 😮 (1 foot longer, 14” wider than the 312/9)

Available June in UK (according to Arnold Clark) at £20,975 (maybe less from CarWow?) which is considerably less than the £25k+ Hyundai want for the ‘basic’ Inster with similar battery size (but the Inster has the problematic NMC battery unlike the LFP in the Fiat)

Stats for the Fiat on this excellent website (+all other EVs including the Inster):
