It's got 5w-40, not sure if synth or semi-synth. Would a heavier oil help reduce blow-by? Maybe worth using 10w-50 next time?

I run 10w-60 on my Forester STi, but it has a built motor and it was getting through a lot of oil with the usual 5w-40

Castrol Edge to quantum C3 premium

Your hoses are secure, none of the mounting points for the air box broken, or the spring on the front missing

Yes, hoses all good, ditto for mounting points and the spring is also fine.

The car is running like a dream at the moment - I think the best bet is to wait until the problem reappears and then I'll check the live data on the code reader and see if anything stands out. Thanks again for your help so far.

Yes indeed, I will not be using Castrol edge again. My 2014 1.2 engine did not like it at all. Back in the 70's I had an old Austin. I had an oil pressure gauge. Having fitted a reconditioned engine I was horrified with 12.5psi oil pressure running Castrol oil. I made the supplier replace the oil pump again, and got 25psi at best. A decent oil had it running 60psi! I have never like Castrol oil ever since. I returned to it with my first TA (Edge (0w30). The valve gear rattle on start up was shockingafter 1k.. Im using 5/40 Quantum C3 Premium synthetic. Bonus is its the same price more or less as 4 litres of Castrol for 5 of Quantum. Pugit Auld Jock says Quantum is made by Fuchs and he favours them. So we seem to be in a similar place by a different route. Quantum is VW approved oil I had no issues with it when I had a Golf and it seems really suitable for the Panda 1.2.

We were catching a lot of oil using edge and had mayo in the catch can. Since the change the catch can is back to just collecting the water vapour. The liquid is now 95%+ water. It takes out about 330ml a week. I guess thats 275 miles a week and driven at night or early morning so very cold air. I really dont think that amount of water being dumped into the crankcase is a good thing. This is not a car with a water consumption habit either the water level remains rock solid and does not ever need topping up. Its my contention these engines with the sealed crank case are daft, and furthermore they are a wet engine anyway We always got a small amount of mayo on the oil cap, and a big regular build up in the manifold of our 169. Cleaning both throttle body and MAP regularly was a pain the rear end. Since fitting catch cans mayo only accumulates in the catch can and nowhere else. OIl consumption is so slight its un noticiable except if driving at speed on the motorway. All my Fiats have been like this minimal oil use except when cuising at over 70mph for long distances when you could expect to need to top up after each 300 miles or so may be 250ml. I had one fill of Castrol Edge 5/40 that worked well but the last lot was rubbish and clearly broke down badly after a short time.. The only reason I dont fit a catch can on our third 1.2 is my daughter lives away and she wont open the bonnet let alone empty a catch can. The two cars with cans are both pretty well identical in the volume of liquid and in both cases its water (condensate). I have to say (touch wood) both are now running as I want, they both drive well, minimal flat spots seem to have a crisp throttle response and are as smooth as silk. I think running with a really clean MAP is the reason. I even have a 3rd catch can on the shelf should Pandabird 4 move near enough for me to empty it. Im afraid the catch cans and the pipes are colour matched to the cars as well.

Sounds like a plan. If you get anything running sweetly stick with your settings and setups.

@The Panda Nut Thanks for the info on oil and catch cans. Not sure what brand of oil is in it, it was changed by a Fiat specialist when the clutch was replaced but as it's due a service, it would be a good time to switch to say a 10w-50.

If I end up adding a catch can, what would you recommend?
TIA.

These were just standard eBay fare they were on £15 but probably £40 by now. I got oil resistant silicon hoses about 1.5 m. Its a job that was worth every penny and some. If I ever get mayo in teh cam cover, I have a cylinder head issue. I hate the stuff. The MAP remains clean for a long time and the manifolds are clear throttle body is also apparently clean enough to eat off without the crap coming from the breather. I have plugged this to beyond the point of boredom on here. I will post a pic of the contents of both our catch cans at some time soon.
