It is a 1.9 TD engine or was
As far as I can ascertain the 1.9TD was only produced with indirect injection. Such engines where reputed to be smoother running that direct injection engines, but always required glowplugs when starting from cold.
Many years ago I changed the combustion chamber inserts on my diesel landrover. These inserts had a group of long pimples opposite the injector which aided combustion by retaining heat. The inserts were a tapping fit into the head, but as I remember they partially overlapped the cylinder wall.
If the 1.9TD is similar how could an insert drop out of the head? This has been puzzling me since it was mentioned earlier. Perhaps cracks developed in the insert, which was why I changed mine.

So basically a Peugeot XUD9TE used in Peugeot 406, 306,309.etc. Used from 1995 to 2002 before they went to the HDi engine.
Also :-
What cars have the xud engine?

  • Citroën Jumpy (Dispatch in UK)
  • Fiat Ulysse.
  • Fiat Scudo.

Sorry Mike, but that says Direct Injection, which would not have separate combustion chambers. Perhaps a PSA DHY, or if vehicle was is a late registration due to conversion and sales delays, possibly a PSA D8B which was a Boxer option until 1999.

Sorry, my mistake, older ones were indirect but later went to Direct injection.:(
I have found in 2000 AutoData Manual Peugeot 406 1995-99 XUD9BTF (DHX), the photo is of the older version used in Peugeot 305s. Also some Peugeot 806 versions
I suspect when Peugeot was getting to the end of the production life they sold some to Fiat.
However Citroen also used them and here are a few examples with the DHX Series detail.
Peugeot loosely based several engines on the XUD9 base even up until the first HDi version, so it may be possible to get a pre ECU XUD9 Series indirect injection version.
Does the photo look similar to OPs engine, I used to have a customer with one of these in a Peugeot 305 estate which was indirect injection I seem to recall. The old version had the brake vacuum driven by a pulley later replaced with a pump direct off the camshaft.

My first lead fizzled out as it was a common rail system :(
It sounds daft but it may be cheaper to buy a running vehicle with the correct engine as an MOT failure or something like that , but you can road test and be sure engine is good.
Just make sure it is the correct engine, they did make a lot of them, most rusted away.:)

Still trying to find an engine , I did find one on ebay for £600 , Ooo that's ok until I realised it was in Spain with a deliver cost of £4400.00 and the engine had covered 270.000 miles , Oh dear , that's a no go .

Looked at several cars on line and asked for photos , Doh they were different .

Keep searching , the right one is out there somewhere.:)

OK lets try this if it is ok with the forum, If not please delete this post.
I will offer a finders fee if anyone can help find an engine in working and good usable condition without
galactic mileage :)
I do hope someone can , I am not yet being chased by the garage who have the van but it will come :(.

Not after any finders fee, had a quick search on eBay and all I can find is a non turbo car which is mot ed and running so you could road test etc. It is up to you to check if engine serial numbers etc tally with what you want and to it's general suitability. Also it's power output compared with your turbo version. There really doesn't seem to be much about. I don't know if feasible to put your turbo manifold etc. injector pump on donor engine. May be a lot of work.:(

Think I;d be cutting my losses and selling it back on ebay as a non-runner.

Price it low enough and someone will take a chance on it I expect.

It's probably decent enough parked up somewhere to live in so a cheap option to live somewhere that it can be parked, a caravan site or something.

Well it's worthless as a motorhome so anything you get back is something.

Personally I'd stick it on ebay for a grand, someone will buy it at that price.
From what OP said originally, he was taken to the cleaners by the original vendor, so that wouldn't touch the sides.

Aye I know, he's spent about £10k I think, £7.7k on the van plus transport costs and garage costs so anything is better than nothing IMO.

I mean who's going to give him £10k for it?

The garage are probably going to start charging storage fees too so sooner or later he's going to have to get rid of it he either sells it for scrap or try to sell as a non runner if he can.

There's two threads running on here and on another forum so everything is documented.

I think he'll be lucky to get a grand.

I'd start the selling process now to try to restrict losses further.

I don't suppose he could use it in a trade in or maybe sell it to We Buy Any Van.com?

We would like to think it would never happen to us, but who knows, I have seen experienced car salesmen conned by members of the public in the past.:(

Aye so have I but it was bought on ebay and yer man bid on it and won this wasn't an impulse buy in a car showroom.

Anyway we all make mistakes so hopefully the OP can get out of the hole he's in and move on.
