Technical Help please. “Fuel cut off”

Hold the phone ladies and gents. I'll apologise for this.

Someone mentioned the earth strap but i was clearly looking at the wrong thing. I brushed past it with my arm and it just disintegrated. I used a jump lead tto connect the battery to the block and bosh! ut's up and running.

Apologies for missing this at the start, guys - thanks for everyone who replied and didn't judge! I can build you a data centre but apparently basic car mechanical / electrical functions are beyond me!
Glad it was that simple👍

to be honest...
It was the Padlock that was fooling me,

Obviously several systems were reliant on the Chassis to Motor path 🤔

All good to know 🤓

I think people that have had problems realise how difficult it can be getting help, but also explaining. glad your sorted.

Hi,

I'm also having a similar problem, not starting and flashing fuel cut off and abs unavailable on screen. I'm the worst with cars but have checked what I think is the earth strap and it seems to be all in one piece and secure though it is a thick green strap with a label on it not a thinner plastic wrapped one that it seems others have (bad photo attatched)

I've only had all my breaks done last week and it cost more than I could afford so I'm dreading it being a big fix or the end of my little 500

If it's green it means it's oxidized. Might cause too high resistance.

I personally am replacing those braided straps with a good quality 100% copper welding wire adding copper connectors and heatshrink on the connection. It costs like 6 - 8 EUR in total. You only need a solid crimping tool, as the cable should be 25 sq mm. Probably there are some finished products available on eBay or amazon.

However that might not be the only problem, but definitely is a place to start. What you see is only the middle part of the strap, you can't see its endings and how bad it look on the body and engine / gearbox ends.

Top photo is how it looked on the 'better' of the two non-FIAT cars, the worse one had so much corrosion that it had swallen like 50 - 60% in diameter :(

Glad its sorted! its a well known (to us at least 😁 ) that the main earth strap disintegrates even faster that the rest of the car!.
ALWAYS the first(but often not last!) port of call for any electrical issues!

Just outside of Stoke. We've managed to take the battery and trays out and in doing so the strap has snapped 😳

Managed to get hold of a new one from halfords - will a mechanic be happy just to come and fit cause I've no idea despite getting this far via YouTube 😂

My suspicion is there is a bolt either end

Gearbox and Inner wing
(a nut and stud.. where the Battery Black cable comes down..)

Bolting the Halfords one in those spots should fix it 👍

I'll put money on it being the earth strap. Mine was a tenner for the cable and i fitted it myself. I did however snap 2 bolts. One on the battery ratchet strap and another on the bold securing the battery tray to the chassis. Tomorrows job is to drill them out and replace and put it all back together.

It is a / can be a DIY job with nothing more than a 10mm ring spanner, a 10mm socket and a 13mm socket but you need to remove the battery, the tray and temporarily move the clutch slave cylinder out of the way. Fidgety job but will save you maybe an hour or 2 in labour and call out charges.

This video shows you how to replace the strap without removing everything by connecting it to another bold that goes through another cylinder however i'm not sure i'd trist this long term with the plastic in the way (but the holes are lined with metal and do bolt to the engine.

This video is the one i followed that has more disassembly required: .

You will more than likely snap bolts here though so be ready for that. I caked mine in WD40 but they still snapped.
