RIGHT THEN, can all the knowledgeable types dust off their best thinking caps. Been looking at the older gearbox I've got and the newer gearbox off Scruffbag and the linkages look significantly different. Changing the linkages looks iffy. Father in law has consulted his ex fiat dealer mate and he reckons the gearboxes changed quite a bit when the internal linkages came in including a change to a bigger spider on the driveshafts meaning that a)changing the gearboxes might present problems b) fixing the internals by swapping parts out of my good one probably won't work and more intriguingly c) the driveshaft spider which I've put in may just have been wrong to start with and the gearbox may actually be OK...
any thoughts, or better still hard pertinent facts anybody?

IT'S ALIVE!!!!
looks like the spider collapsing gouged out the drive in the diff so when the new driveshaft went in it just slipped in it's housing:

can't see that well in the photo but if you look you can see the outer end kind of tapers off there. So, not really fancying a gearbox change we went for...

doubled up on the big end washers on the driveshaft thus moving the spider further into the housing and off the damaged section. So with some trepidation Scruffbag was prepped for my maiden drive:

totally ready to go now and for the first time since I dragged him home he finally moved under his own power:woot::woot:
just up the street and back, didn't want to go too far what with the seatbelt not actually bolted in and all but HE'S ALIVE!! mwahahahaha:D
can start treating him like a car again now(y)

Wow, I missed a lot!! Nice one getting hold of another Panda! One more in safe hands, which is allways good to know. I see you've also been working out in the cold too, but I had been too caught up in my fleet to notice!

Sounds like you've got the major stuff out the way. ie power to the wheels lol. I know the feeling about gaining trust in a car too, took me a while to gain trust in QingQing!

Best of luck with it!

minor tinkering today on Scruffbag, carpet's back in with plush new underlay, dash back together (all bar the hot air feed to the back of the dash vent which went all brittle and has totally disintegrated:mad:) drivers seat back in propely, stereo wired in and fitted (always the most important bit!) and another whizz round with the T-cut with the aid of a drill bit polishing attachment just like you're never supposed to do. Paintworks just starting to look vaguely respectable in places not affected by rust spots.
Main sticking point today: discovered that the spare batch of alloy wheel bolts I thought I had is actually 8 bolts:( oops.

another day gone, more minor faffing. Guys came to pick up the Punto I've finally sold yesterday so I sort of never got started till late on so got the UT wheels fitted. So who said you need spacers to get them on the back? No need at all if you've got an angle grinder:devil:
fitted with the standard bolts too for the minute but shiny new slightly longer ones on the way.

Had an investigatory prod round the N/S sill where it was bubbling through inside and surprise surprise there's a hole (now) so think today's the day I finally bite the bullet and crank up that scary mig gear I've had in the garage for months but always been scared of. Wish me luck. If it works out I'll get some practice in then I might have to have a go at the niggly bits on Grumbleweed.
That done, means the interior can go back in properly (no problem accessing the rear arch seam with it in)
With the rust at the botom of the doors and the faded paint meaning zero chance of a colour match I think I might just go for the traditional Fiat paint job of black halfway up the doors to line up with the bumpers. Main problems with the paintwork are what to do with the hatch as it has rust scabs all over(n) Any ideas?

my heater pipe broke to, piece of crap they are. i keep it switched to blow on the front windows and when i want hot cabin air fan on and open the vent and its good enough. the whole dash does get hot though!
was thinking that myself but I'm rather nervous of what the heat will do to all the wiring in there, It's all fragile enough already. At the moment I've just reassembled it with a block of foam stuffed in the outlet which should I hope channel most to the windscreen but just let a little through to the vent.

grrr, rubbish day. done nowt. cranked up the mig which had stood unused for about 20 years apparently and strangely the enormous roll of wire on it had started to rust a wee bit and wouldn't feed through properly. So after an annoying morning unsuccessfully experimenting with the mig on an old table leg decided to tackle the other outstanding job which is really stopping the car being useable which is the complete lack of tank straps on the fuel tank.
how inaccessible is the front bolt on the fuel tank!!!!! right under the rear axle mount. Got the nut out fairly easily after a lucky swipe with a 13mm socket dangling off a UJ on the end of a long extension bar. Not even siezed or anything! Spent the entire rest of the afternoon trying to get the damn thing back on. Resigned to probably having to drop the rear axle off to get to it now. Given up for the day now due to being freezing after lying under there swearing and looking at all the rusty bits for ages. really cold wind whistling out there today.
ooh no.did get one thing done! new wheel bolts turned up this morning so they're on. wheels look great with shiny bolts on(y)

There is a red tailgate in the classifieds, if yours is the same colour as my CLX, colour code 130 I think then it will be the right colour as I bought a door from the same member.
don't even go there:( need a bonnet too, this ones well rusty underneath and the black paint is all crazed. And he's advertising an exhaust manifold I could still do with. BUT could pretty much afford a new bonnet by the time I'd travelled down to the far side of london from here to fetch it all:(
never mind. gotta get the thing roadworthy first!

The postage on a bonnet is only about £20 if you arange to have it collected.

There are a few guys on the net, I generaly use Paisly freight.

Saves an expensive trip and a lost day :)

OK one more liitle victory. The tank strap is now on (after much swearing and futile poking of my tiniest tools) without having to drop the rear axle. So the flapping loose ends of rusty metal have now been replaced with... some old seatbelt! Secret weapon of choice for a strong, non rusting tank support;) done the job for 10 years now on grumbles so I've gone the same route again(y)

been messing with paint, since another day has slipped by without actually touching the car:(
so rough plan is..

I know the black bottom half is a cop out for rusty doors but I really like it. Did it on my uno years ago and that didn't even have rusty doors!

Black lowers ftw!

Pandas really suit this two tone colour scheme, I've done it to my old fizz and current 750 (no rusty doors), Fiat did it to my very first MK 1, and Seat did it to my Terra, so it's gotta be the right thing to do. ;) :p

Blacking out the 'C' pillar is also very effective, looks good with smoked windows (y).

How about making the black bonnet look like carbon fibre. You can do this by spraying silver through tool box drawer liner.

don't want to do much to the bonnet, needs replacing anyway, paint's crazed, it's bent, and badly rusted on the underside. Maybe a real carbon fibre one...or not.
for the bonnet I'm hoping red again but possibly with these on I used to have on grumbles:
