Technical Why won't it work

From what I remember from my panda

When ignition is on there is battery live to one terminal on the coil , use a volt meter or small bulb between battery -ve and coil to find the live coil wire.

See if the voltage disappears when the engine cuts out

The carbon contact on the spring in the distributor cap does feel loose but as long as the carbon is there and it's spring it's fine

Ok. I don't have the tools for that. But could that be the reason it stops by its self?
Looking at your distributor I am tempted to make a guess it is the amplifier black plastic box screwed to the distributor body on the outside.
Many cars of that era used similar forms of electronic ignition before finally going to full ECU set up.
At the time we were replacing lots of Ford amplifiers .
Do any of these amplifiers look like the one on your distributor, if one matches it may be worth trying as was a common fault in the days when they were nearly new.
Re the Engine Series Number, it doesn't quite match what I have, is that from the actually Vin Plate?

Need to see IF spark not occurring is stopping engine......

The distributor is new complete with mounted new amplifier

No it may not pull well, it may exhibit pinking or poor acceleration but timing will either stop the car running or not. Its got to be badly bout to stop it running. Thats not a timing issue.

I would be looking now at the fuel system, starting withe the fuel filter , pump and lines to make sure it has a steady supply of fuel.

A useful piece of equipment is a Gusons Test Tune, it does volts, amps, dwell angle for points and can run a variety of simple ignition tests, Maybe you can locate one on the internet.

Also consider loose wires on the ignition switch and dirty fuses with poor contacts.

From your original description of what occurred I am suspicious of the fuel system. Black smoke makes me wonder if the choke / cold start is involved.
