I could out run it to 0-5mph I reckon... so i can beat a cinq ;) lol

9 seconds [:0][:0][:0] for a "diesel bus" as many class it, that's damn fast!

I feel I have to educate you here Paul, any Merc with a Kompressor badge on it will be supercharged not turbo'ed, possibly this Merc was automatic too which would hinder it's quick getaway and also there is so many traction control systems on them that it would cut engine power when the tyres began to slip.

The figures do say around 13 to 60 for a Cinq but with a little fettling you could bring that down nearer 11 I think, lightweight means it'll appear quicker of the mark.

Had a good chuckle at that story Shakey, I knew you'd say the cops came flying past! Ace1

Supercharger/turbocharged is irrelevant, it's still a fairly powerful engine in a well made car with a 0-60 of around 7 seconds in most guises, automatic or not...traction control gives a good start too, wheel slip doesn't help much. Funnily enough, adding a K&N doesn't drop the 0-60 by 2 seconds also. Still, a averagly driven Merc Kompressor auto will outrun a cinq driven at near its maximum.

Quicker off the mark, as stu said, for the first few metres, it's a lighter car, but the heavier merc might have 3-4 x the power, therefore the power to weight ratio is outstanding compared. That's why people who want a bit of performance buy Merc Komps and not cinq sportings....You're mad if you believe a sporting could have a chance against something like that UNLESS seriously modified like Pete's 1.2 turbo which will shift because it's light weight. 54HP in a little car isn't exactly a pocket rocket...

I didn't lose the arguement helz, I had a bir reply typed up but Paul is like a dog with a ball when these things start (he won't let go) so to avoid a days worth of replying when he's not taking anything on board would just be wasting my time so I thought I'd skip it but if paul took some pleasure out of who cares reply then good for him.

I can't believe your argueing a case for this, there is NO WAY any standard 1.1 is gonna beat a sports car for more than a metre or two.

I used to work with a kid who though his 950 fiesta was some kind of giant slayer, he come out with lines like 'the cossie went to take me but I floored it and he couldn't get by in time' - what rubbish.

I had similar situation the other day when a lad in a 1.2 punto was trying to get ahead off the lights as two lanes went into one, he was giving it his all, but even though I was 3 up (makes little difference in a diesel), I was comfortably able to pass him without giving it much. And my car is nowhere near as quick as an SLK or whatever it was and I know a car like that would take mine easy.

Oh and being supercharged rather than turbo charged there is no turbo lag;)

First car by the way, Vauxhall Chevette, in a lovely shade of brown, and yes at the time I did think I could take on much faster cars:D

So the guy in the Merc didn't try his hardest, I'm sure you've sped away from something bigger and better than you James?

It's who's driving that counts in my opinion.

I still can't believe you're arguing a point that sank days ago!

Didn't try his hardest: 1) that means it's not really "beating him" 2) ANY Merc Komp driven NORMALLY would beat any standard cinq....that's why people pay 40+k for them and don't buy a cinq sporting!

It's who's driving that counts; well, yes, when two cars of the same standard are up against each other then yes, but apart from that, what a silly thing to say! I class myself a good driver, and I class a girl at school who drives a much faster car a bad driver, up at the lights she would be laughing at me because of the stats, it doesn't take a genius to floor it and pull away!

Give up and accept the guy was either taking the ****/on drugs when he made the claim/didn't understand that racing isn't "racing" if the other guy is an 80 something on the way to church on a sunday morning!

I practically gave away my chevette with 6months test and around £600 spent on new parts:( You see them going for decent money now too, I would like to have been able to mothball it really but I'm too much of a horder as it is anyway.

Oh and Liam, point taken, I know what you mean, I have also been at the other end of it too, I remember one time in a Saab 93 turbo, I could hardly get away from a van at the lights cos it was pissing down and even with the TC I was struggling to get the power down, BUT once your away, your away if you know what I mean.

This lad talks about him being ahead to 70mph, by which time the merc would have been long gone. Another one I remember is racing an 80's 911, I was in a hyundai (crock of s**t) Coupe 2.0, I managed to beat him off one set of lights (I went for it and he didn't for about 5 seconds until he realised I was), by the time he caught me I was braking for the next set of lights, we both had our windows down and he said something smug so I so wanted to have him.

I went for it, got a good start and was ahead, until he changed to second and THEN went for it :D:D:D

I used to drive company cars a lot you see so have loads of little tales from them, like wrapping the bosses car in my first month[:0]

I don't wish to fuel fights, but I think that lad was exagerating just a little, and felt the need to show Paul a little support, him being so HOT and all[8D]

Oh and it's "Mr hot" from now on :D;)

The weirdest car I've ever owned was a yellow Daff 33. One of those things with a twin cylinder 600cc engine that sounded like a sewing machine, driving twin belts to an infinate probability drive contraption next to the wheels. No stories to go with this one, it was amazingly reliable and incredibly boring!!!!!!!!!!

first car was a 1.2 grey nova. was quite smart (lmao) well i sold it to a 16 year old (i was only 16) for 15 quid (only got 10 as he was gonna pay me the other 5 later) well he burn the s**t out of it round town etc etc got drunk and chased some coppers in it, took it to the golfcourse and ripped up everything.

then left it by the 18th hold and set it alight. but before that drive into a few walls just to see what it felt like and also drive it into hillside. rolled it on the golfcourse aswell

ahh when we were kids....

then onto my punto that i currently have

it's so long ago I can hardly remember my first car...makes me feel well past it:(, I think of anything about G-plate onwards as 'new' and most of those have gone to the crusher! Anyway it was a Lancia Fulvia Coupé not very fast in a straight line but very fast point to point on twisty roads. Can't think of anything funny about it though except for the rear arm of the subframe detaching from the bodyshell ....I wondered what that scraping noise was!

100% lancia ....with a hint of fiat
