Car has started to get hot really quick. Got a temp gun and checked top and bottom rad hose temperatures and bottom one really hot but top one still cold. I’m guessing stuck thermostat? Anyone else agree and is it an easy job to change as couldn’t see it in any guides. Car has only done 13K miles (2019) so quite surprised if it is the case

If it only done 13K in 5 years, ( average 7miles a day?) then quite possible just ceased up, from just be sat there, or early bathtub failure, but with such low mileage taken till now to show?

I’ve done about 4K in last year. Woman before me had it from new. What do you mean by bathtub failure?

Failure rates for devices, systems and parts are not linear or constant with time. Typically there is a higher rate with new parts ( infant deaths/ manufacturing defects);than stabilises to a lower level and then effects of wearing out/ageing lead to higher failure rates. Plotted, failure rate against time this resembles a “U”, cross section of a bath tub. As manufacting has improved production quality then early failures should be low, like modern maternity care, but still higher than the life normal if not picked up detected prior to fitting. What is the coolant like? Ever been topped up/ changed?

That makes perfect sense cheers. Think the coolant is original but looked in good condition but if it’s the thermostat it will be changes anyway. I’d done a full service on it with new oil and filter (proper 0-30 spec shell oil. New plug and air filter. Drove it 15 miles into town and everything was fine. About 3 miles on the way home after a 90 min stop I heard the fan come on which is unusual and now the temp bars got up to 4 in less than a mile

Eh up mnp1962

I said it might be worth checking rad hose temps in your original post 👍

I’m betting now it’s the thermostat, or worst case water pump

Check your water pump - not easy to get at as pulley needs to come of and then the cover.

Keep checking the obvious

Yep on your advice I bought a cheap laser thermometer. Top hose cold, bottom hose really hot. Just like you said I’m hoping it’s the thermostat. I did see the pulley needs to come off if it’s the water pump. Hoping it’s not with just 13K miles. I just don’t have the time plus getting bad arthritis in my hand so dropping it into the local garage.

Eh up

For what it’s worth swap thermostat first and try it, re measure the hoses, hopefully it will sort it.

Just be careful don’t run the car too far until proven, if it’s the water pump it will need changing ASAP,

It’s doable but read my other thread when I did it 😳🤔😂

Glad your getting there 👍

Luckily the garage is less than a mile away. My only concern is it seemed to all happen rather quick but as you say I’ll get them to change over the stat and see where we go from there

Just a thought and may not be related… but the casting supporting the oil filter housing includes a water-cooled oil cooler. Is there the slightest chance something is blocked/kinked in hoses to that after the oil change?
Thanks for the suggestion.always worth checking, I’ll have a look tomorrow although I did have a good check over once eit happened
