Panda (Classic) Charmanda(er) The Panda

Introduction

Name Change! Previously known as Charmania for anyone not in the know, she's had a slight rename, keeping the Char but sticking my favourite childhood Pokemon name in there, Charmander, mainly because the first time I ever encountered a Panda I was about 8 years old and Pokemon was my favourite thing in the whole world.

Some details,
1992 Fiat Panda 750 Mania
769cc FIRE engine.
Lowered 40mm.
Seicento Sporting Front Seats
Side Stripes for faster acceleration
Fiat 127 'Palio' Alloys.
Veglia Rev counter, so I can count my revs.

I washed her, wanted to take her somewhere nice for pictures but it hasn't been sunny for long enough to do that, so I'll get nicer pictures at some point....
Here she is now, Charmanda.

Sorry for the terrible lighting. Can't do much about the sun.
I found that the speakers mounted in the side panels behind the drivers seat (next to the rear passengers) gave a better fuller sound in Bo Selecta when I drove it. Tempted to do that to fizzle if I can source some spare rear panels.

I've already got rear speakers although they aren't wired up as when I did plug one in the cone disintegrated almost immediately. My new speakers are taller than the door cards though so I couldn't really mount them easily...

Ooh, that's interesting...!

Hal has the same setup; and I was thinking of adding the traditional front-mounted pods (as I did to Pippin -- who was just putting out sound in mono, on the driver's side...). Perhaps I shall just start off with a new HU, and take it from there....

im in the process of repairing a blown sub. 12 inch thingy. the cone has been crushed but all of the electrics still work. its quite big. rated at something like 1500 watts.
ill be making a box for that but it will be small. i know it needs to be over a certain size to create a good resonance but i'd rather have the boot space over the sound. hell if i get it working good ill sell it and get something smaller.
just another one of my many projects.

dead desktop hard drive for size comparison.

Had that in my first Panda and it worked really well, acoustics seem to be good behind the rear panels. What I did to avoid the 'it's behind you' feeling is team 13cm speakers in the rear with a little pair of tweeters on either end of the hammock to move the sound staging forwards. Worked a treat and you don't lose any hammock space.

Fit a diesel engine, pull out the carpets and soundproofing and then you won't ever have speakers big enough and it won't be a problem.

By the way can anyone explain why a car radio is now called a 'Head unit' ?

And why would anyone want to fit a Sub, or a booster etc etc when the sole purpose of a 'Car Radio' is to listen to Radio 4.?

clearly you have not got into MP3 technology yet :)

think its called a head unit because its.. umm.. the top part that has all the display and controls. i know on some major ice builds they move the head unit somewhere else and just have the face plate mounted to the dash.
think it came about when CD changers were introduced... though im not sure.

Well its nice to see we're still on topic in my MM thread...

I'm officially at Uni (hence my lack of Online presence since Saturday and my general ramblings), so Char' for now has been left at home with her tyres over pumped and the battery disconnected. I intend to return in a month and bring her down with me once I've sussed the parking (y)

Obviously I'll still be on the forum from time to time (Ok probably most days...)

I took a video on a private road of my last drive in Char', so I don't forget what she sounds like :D

I could upload it but its only 10 seconds long and not an interesting watch....

Have fun! Time to work -- and play -- hard...! :D

Three of the best years of my life... -- and I learned a whole lot more than just what my course taught me; and made some great friends. Ah, the memories.... :)
Ooops, you did that wrong:p Uni in Scotland FTW. Four great years instead of three:cool:;)

Another handy hint, The guy with the car at uni is a hero(y)..Enjoy!

Question. Will a 1108 from a Seicento fit into a Panda on original engine mounts. I assume a Sei gearbox would be out of the question because it'll have cable change rather than the rod change Char' has, I could probably get away with fitting a 999cc 'box since that'll go straight in right?

(I'm suffering severe Panda withdrawal, keep looking at breaking Sei's on ebay, I could afford one over the summer and maybe do an engine swap [With someone holding my hand] that Char' deserves?)

.... Ok I'm officially insane Ahhhh

EDIT: I know 54 horses isn't an insane amount of power and the swap might not be worth it compared to a 1242 but if I did this next summer, a few years after I'd consider turbo'ing the 1108 (lots of info on this in the Cinq/Sei section)

I would have put a bigger engine in her too had I kept her, so it's a thumbs up from me for a swap. (y)

Don't worry about the gearbox as you already have a 5spd 999cc one, they are the same! It would probably be a good idea to recondition it while it was out though, seeing as you're so hard on it. :p

Engine mountings will be fine, but have you thought about whether to keep it carbed or go for spi?
