General 500 in chill out purple... Ordered

Well, just driven excitedly past the garage to check out the "chillout purple" on the forecourt as mine is yet to arrive! I can honestly so I am sooooo gutted by the colour!! I can catagorically say that I wasn't sure which car was actually purple! It is just dark!! I thought it was going to be a nice deep funky purple, but it's just one of those dark nondescript colours that could be grey, blue, purple or yes, even black! Soooo disappointed!! :(

Are you no longer able to change your colour choice? I know someone else on here has changed theirs recently as the order has been put in but not 'built' yet, so to speak? It's definately worth checking with your garage.. and, at the end of the day, if they have sold you something on the basis that it will look one colour, and it turns out it is another, surely that is their mistake to fix, not yours to live with..??

My understanding is that once you sign the order form and hand over your €200 deposit (I don't know what it is elsewhere) a contract has been entered into. You would normally have a week to make some changes but that would be in relation to adding on or removing an extra or possibly the colour. When I was placing an order for a new Pop 500 back in March 2010 the alloy wheels had to be ordered at the start and couldn't be changed.

If you decide not to take the car when it arrives you need to have a sound basis for refusing it. Stating that the colour isn't to your liking isn't suffice.

Here's the answer: pick it up on a bright sunny day and have them park it outside in the sunshine, where the light should lighten it and make it sparkle.

First impressions last.

This was a similar thread on the new Panda section regarding the purple colour (just click on the Youtube link in the thread).

Admittedly the Panda' purple shade is a metallic one, but to be honest I am sure the new 500 shade will still come up just as bright when the sun comes out. Also (if the configurator is to be believed), both colours appear reasonably similar on the configurator.

Do not fear!(y)

You could try talking to you dealer and explaining your colour problem.
I would be very wary of ordering another colour you haven't seen.
The configurator seems to have the new colours a fair bit lighter than they actually are.
Chillout Purple is metallic, so it does have a nice glittery shine to it, but I understand if you don't like it, you want to love your 500 and you have to look at the colour on the dash !
I did post some Chillout pics over here https://www.fiatforum.com/500/305652-ordering-new-500-tough-choose-3.html they're not overly good but it does show a plum colour :)

Thanks for correcting me there, didn't realise the new 500 was metallic as well.

In that case the purple colour for the 500 and new Panda is almost identical then.(y)

Has anyone taken any photos of it yet? I really love to see what colour it actually is?

That REALLY does look black in those pictures.. I thought you were mucking about until I saw the colour named on the advert..!!
To me, if someone uses the configurator to decide on a colour (and lets face it that's all Fiat give you until they get cars in in the new colours..) then get given a car that is totally different to the colour on the Fiat webiste, then they should be able to complain / ask for a refund /replacement as the item is 'not as described' .. (I am sure they cant but with such a big difference they should..)
If a website showed and named a pair of shoes as bright purple and they turned up black, you'd ask for a refund or exchange. Why should this be different for a car? Yes, its a lot more expensive, a bigger more costly mistake for a compnay to put right, but surely that is up to Fiat to get right in the first place, not up to the consumer to live with a colour thats completely different to the one Fiat have chosen to use on their configurator.
Fiat do need to start producing proper colour samples of a decent size that are available at all dealers on the day that new colours come out.

I'd say the difference is sufficiently great that you could validly claim you were misled by the images on configurator when deciding which colour to order & that would be sufficient reason to refuse to accept deliverly and to demand a refund of your deposit.

In the worst case, you would lose your deposit & have to reorder, perhaps through a different dealer. That may be a better option than being disappointed every time you look at the car. Whatever they might threaten you with, I can't see any dealer taking the risk of pursuing you through the County Court to complete the sale - the chance of them losing would be too great.

Thoughts from a legal perspective, Robin?

Im sure Fiat have all the legal parts in place - I suspect that somewhere on the Configurator it says not to use it as an exact colour guide - but the problem is that consumers don't have a lot else to go on, so are going to use it as a guide...

I think you could reject it. The right exists for goods not as described, fit for their purpose, or of satisfactory quality. That car (which I happen to think is a lovely colour) is not as it has been described.

Anyone in this position should also hunt out the adverts of the car in COP currently in the press and also take a picture of the massive outdoor advertising hoardings that are promoting it, all of which are even lighter than the config. (Hippycinq - not sure you are in this boat - if you are then pop to London Road in St Albans. One of the big adverts is up just by the railway bridge as you head into town from the orbital road).

It could turn out to be a great colour subtle, but different. I quite fancy it. Alfa do a similar thing with Etna black. Essentially it looks black, but when ( if ) the sun shines you get am amazing array of dark red/brown volcanic like colours coming out on all the highlights.

Robin, no, Im not in this situation - I am far too picky to order anything without seeing it first..! I just feel for the person who has ordered it already and seems somewhat upset that it's not what she thought it would be.. I know how I would feel if this were me. I was just hypothetically thinking if she had wanted to change her colour choice, if she had a leg to stand on..

Personally, I agree with Robin, I really like the colour, it's very subtle. Jaguar and Nissan both do very similar colours but I would agree it's not really purple - more of a blackberry colour.

Thanks to all you lovely people for your comments and suggestions! I have been informed by my dealer that my car has been built and is now in the UK, so no chance of changing it now. I have to go and sign more paperwork on Saturday, so I will have a closer look at it then and find out if I have any other options. I shall take along a screen shot of your photo vs configuration and see what they have to say for themselves. Interestingly, the national ad campaign pics seem to have disappeared from the Internet, so if anyone has a billboard or newspaper pic they could post here I would be eternally grateful. I understand that i took a chance when i ordered it "blind", but i honestly didn't expect it to be THAT different. Ive never had a brand new car before and had been so excited about it! Don't feel quite the same now! Thanks again for all being so supportive. XX :hug:

Whatever you do, if you are not happy, don't sign anything. If you feel you really have to, then write this under your signature:

"Signed under protest. I hereby reserve my right to reject the car for failing to be as described. I also reserve all my other rights to the fullest extent possible."
