Hi all, I’m new to the forum and looking for some help, we have recently purchased a 2009 3.0 Fiat based motor home which is a very lazy starter, I am a vehicle fitter by trade and have replaced the battery (100 amp) and the starter motor ( Bosch 2.5kw ) I have also run leads directly from the battery to the starter and engine to eliminate the starter and earth leads, the vehicle starting does not really improve when hot or by jumping off an additional battery, can anyone help please?

Hi Kev,

Welcome to the forum.

I cannot offer any suggestions for further improvements to the cranking speed, but is this the problem?

Motorhomes are often kept in storage for long periods, and have been known to suffer from mice in the air filter, with filter debris obstructing the air ducting etc.

Faulty injector(s) with excessive leak off, could delay pressure build up in the common rail.

On my earlier 2.8 JTD, the camshaft sensor is used only when starting the engine to determine the stroke. Subsequent timing is from the crankshaft sensor. I think that the multi jets are similar in this respect. A faulty sensor, faulty wiring, or incorrect sensor adjustment, could all cause starting problems with either a warm, or a cold engine. The specified air gap for the camshaft sensor on my 2.8 JTD is 0.8 to 1.5mm. Again the setting for the 3.0 muti jet, is probably similar.
