Evening Boys n Girls,

My 1999 2.8d has developed starting issues.

She wouldn't turn over enough to start so I jumped her from another car. All good, off we went.

Came home and parked up. Since then she will start, run for 10-20 sec then cut out. I have both the red, chipped key and the usual black key. Same result.

The engine will fire and run for a very short while then cut out. When that happens red battery and oil light come on and begin flashing.

Any ideas, help etc will be very welcome :)

Hi,
no other history..was it the battery..?

disconnect battery for a couple of hours then reconnect and try again, may just reset something;)

 I'm leaning towards an earth issue, and the jump lead bypassed it,
use a lead from battery negative to engine block,
then clear and read engine fault codes let us know what you find

Charlie

Is that an idTD or the JTD engine? I presume for 1999 it is the former

Yes its the former, bog standard 2.8 D with no frills :)

Battery fully charged.

Disconnected the battery last night, so will see what happens when I get back from work.

Battery is mounted on the l/h side. Above and behind to the right of the battery on the bodywork is a soft type plunger button. Never touched it but just curious as to its purpose?

So, put some fuel in and put a 10 amp fuse into the third red heavy duty cable running from the positive terminal. I had been using it without quite happily for 3 years with no trouble, worth a try. Connected up the earth and put keys in. It started :) happily running for 20 min, then I stopped it re started, all good me thinks.

Go out to it an hour later to take it for a spin starts up ok, the moment I release the hand break, the engine stops.

I can turn the key and I have battery and ign red lights, nothing else and it wont turn over now.

Suggestions please...........

poor connection somewhere..adding that fuse made a circuit;)

I think the fuse is a red herring if it won't turn over at all now thats easy to isolate by checking the voltage at the solenoid terminal. I'd be thinking ignition switch or earth strap as those would explain with the earlier problems too.

Connection on the battery live terminal, the terminal itself, and sometimes fuse connections on top become loose, vehicle cuts until wiggled. Just for good measure, test your surface charge on the battery as it does need 12v to open injectors.
