17 & looking for the cheapest insurance?

you might wonder what cars in the UK have the Cheapest average insurance premiums?

Yahoo published this article a few days ago which includes the 'Panda Selecta' and the 'Seat Marbella Jeans' as two of the cheapest cars in the UK to insure (y)

Interesting. You'd be hard pressed to get a Selecta if on a budget now though :p

Dad was paying £80 a year fully comp for his back in 2009 :)

Insurance is ridiculous for young drivers. If I bought an old car knowing my luck it would break down all the time, I do a lot of miles and I need my car to start everyday. My Punto is only insurance group 3 and yet its £3k to insure, ridiculous!

I've had old cars the they've always started everyday ;) :p

I'm guessing your in quite a high risk post code. But saying that if you look at some of the cost regarding the liablility in young drivers on insurance companies it makes you think twice!

Claims from people I know first hand & their close friends amount to about £3-4million. A collegue's friend from school ended up paralysed from neck down due to a 18yr old driving like a retard.

to add to that

something like a third of road traffic accidents where someone is killed or seriously injured in the UK involve someone aged 17-25 as many as two thirds of these accidents involve a 17-25 year old who has simply lost control and crashed without involving any other cars or vehicles and often late at night.

each death on a UK road instantly costs the country £1m in investigations police ambulance fire service, medical treatment, damage to property road closures etc etc, (did you know just one night in hospital costs the NHS £400-500)

Serious injury cost a hell of a lot more, having worked in areas where young drivers have suffered severe and permanent brain damage as a result of an accident, unable to even acknowledge the presence of somebody in the room. i can tell you death is so much cheaper and kinder sometimes. These guys (they always seem to be young guys) require unbelievable levels of care at huge expense which makes a £3000 premium look like pocket change to a tramp, £3k would last less than a day, two at most.

So in your first 8 years of driving you are twice as likely to cause an accident as anyone else in the remaining 50-60 years of their life and you are 2 thirds more likely to be killed or seriously injured and that is why you pay a bloody fortune for insurance...

You've hit it in one Chris, people moan that they're paying sometimes 4-5 times the value of the car in some peoples cases and can't understand why. They seem to forget, and half don't even realise, that they're being indemnified for upto £20,000,000. Now that's a lot more 000's than they'll ever pay into the system if they were unfortunate enough to need to call upon serious £££ for damage they've caused.

Yeah, I'm 17, I'm likely to crash etc. etc. but not even a year ago this same exact same quote was around £1700. If they could do it for £1700 just a year ago, why £3000 now?
Anyway I've already cost the NHS thousands so at least I've got my fair share :D
Needed an air ambulance and 3 weeks in hospital when I was 9, bet that wasn't cheap :p

Because costs are rising. Simple.

The NHS isn't linked directly to insurance coast, and the air ambulance most probably was a charity, so at the very most you've got something out of a charity

And blame all these fake whiplash claims for hikes in premiums.

When my dad crashed my punto they tried ramming a whiplash claim down his throat.

To be fair its not really the cost of the Personal injury claim thats causing a rise in costs, its the associated Legal fees involved, as we as 3rd party companies giving out courtesy cars etc and billing insurance companies stupid amounts for the previlidge (sp?). PI claims are used to often as a scape goat IMO.

Something I have never been able to fathom. The average insurance premium for a male driver under twenty one years of age is £3417 but the maximum penalty for driving without insurance is £1000 and six points on your licence. No wonder many young drivers save £2417 and drive illegally. The problem is insurance companies are businesses and need to make a profit. When 83% of collisions involve a whiplash claim their costs go up and the premiums go up to meet that demand.

This is England 2012. :bang:
