Technical 1242 8v SPI Preparing Engine For Turboing

Here are some pics for you guys, put the cinq in the garage last Saturday and have been out there pretty much every night after work since, then this weekend. Good progress made I think, Megasquirt all in and working from what I have tested so far. Would be all mounted in to place if i didn't have to tear the dash out tomorrow to trace some astrnomical water ingress  Will update with more pics when its all mounted up, the engine will be going in next

Greeeat thread :)

How do you plan to wire up your 1368 engine? If it is one of the later ones say 2003- then I know they are quite involved on the electric side of things.

Can you run MS directly off the 1368 engine? Do you not need additional drivers or any of that lark due to the double coil packs? (if it actually has them, I'm not very familiar with the 1368)

Also using MS, do you keep the original loom but just bin the ECU and then piggyback from the relevent sensors? I take it you are using throttle sensor, crank sensor and MAP?

My next engine swap is the 1368. I'm already bored of 1242 16v power. Just need to figure out standalone fuelling and then I'll get stuck in :)

I thought that with MS you chucked away all your ECU and original loom and used the MS control box and bits of original wiring to just work the basics like fuel injection and timing.

How can you hook it up to the Punto ECU aswell? Unless you mean you just let the MS work the fuelling and the punto ECU work the ignition?

I've heard wasted spark used a few times, what are the benefits of it?

Also does it come standard with MS?

Arc are you using a 1368 with mk1 1242 inlet manifolds or is that just my bad judgement of a small picture lol

I think I'll PM you actually I have too many questions and someone elses thread :p

i am using mk 1 1242 inlet manifolds; more info - > https://www.fiatforum.com/members-motors/196211-my-1368cc-16v-cinquecento.html and https://www.fiatforum.com/cinquecento-seicento/176286-my-1-4-16v-cinquecento-development-thread.html

basically, with MS.. you hack the stock ECU connector off the end of the loom and connect it to the MS ECU.

wasted spark = twin coil packs. One fires plug 1 and 4, the other 2 and 3. With the firing order being 1,3,4,2. It means that you get wasted sparks on 4,2,1,3 (as the plug will spark.. but theres not the right conditions for a burn to occur)

it has advantages over Coil On Plug as it is cheaper, been around longer etc

looks good progress mate! too much wirings for my liking :p! what kind of water ingress out of curiosity ?

Lol Gaz :p water ingress was from around the windscreen seal at the bottom, sorted now! Dash out job, got rid of the soundproof barrier while i was at it lol.

No more turbo?

Maybe in the future, or a Rotrex :slayer:

Yea Megasquirt as I see is being discussed now, don't worry about asking questions on my thread, the more thats on here the more potential it has for helping someone else out! :)

glad you sorted it mate, i expect the problem was from the replacement windscreen i had fitted by rac auto windscreens then, useless ****s! whats the timescale now?!

Update on progress, pictures in the order they appear;

-the dash out to trace the water ingress
-the soundproofing and carpet removed
-the dash refitted (minus soundproofing behind)
-megasquirt mounted in the radio opening
-megasquirt cover plate fitted
-cinq gearbox cleaned and painted up
-lightened 1368 flywheel
-engine and box mounted in place

Hopefully be getting some more done tomorrow, gear linkages etc connected, decide which inlet manifold im gonna fit on there and possibly get that done too. Then sort a TB and I can get the sensors connected up and wires run neatly.

Cheers

Lenny

EDIT - Need an FPR if anyone has one kicking about

Here is a picture of the car at close of play today:

Gearbox linkages are now all connected up, speedo cable etc., inlet manifold fitted, injectors fitted, FPR fitted and plumbed in.

Vacuum pipes to be run and connected up tomorrow, and awaiting arrival of my punto mk1 16v coil packs so I can wire everything in at once for ease of spiral wrapping/conduit fitting and clipping up.

Gonna block off the ICV in the 1.6 16v marea TB tonight and make a stainless pipe joiner for the radiator hose with a tapped hole in the middle (for the temp gauge sender)

i can't remember what packs on mine, could well be off my old 8v engine. The brava/o ones differ as the coil pack for all 4 cylinders is one unit.

Instead of making a joiner etc, what about just drilling and tapping the stat housing?
