Yep I would say you have concluded correctly the stop solenoid is working.

May I suggest buying a primer bulb and fitting it in the fuel line

good shout, where is the best place to put it?

Hi, Thank you so much for your help. As you said, I put a bulb in line with the fuel feed to the filter, and after pumping it a good few time I got diesel. I started and run for a few seconds after a few mor pumps and a few more starts, it started and is running again. So thank you for your time and your help, I feel I have learnt a lot.

Yes you have learned and done very well(-:

Now get the cam belt kit and water pump replaced before either fail causing catastrophic irreparable engine failure- irreparable because many parts are no longer available new or used and that engine complete used is more rare than unicorn........

Don't leave that clear tube on it is not suitable for fuel
