Technical Interference or non

Technical Interference or non

Hi guys,

I found the concrete evidence... https://www.fiatforum.com/punto-ii/339351-tinted-my-rear-lights-4.html

Oldhammer commented on this section using Autodata...

It states for engine 188A.4000 (1.2 8V fitted to Panda between 2003 and 2009).

''Caution: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s).

That's from AUTODATA who receive their info from the manufacturer.

I still fail though to find any concrete evidence to suggest that the 1242cc 60bhp engine is non-interference. Only people saying it is.

If someone has had a cambelt snap on one of these with no damage done, then I'd love to hear from them.

However, I'm still under the illusion that the 1242cc is interference and 900cc FIRE is the only non interference engine.

HonestJohn said Massimo (a Fiat engine designer) stated that all the 1242cc engines were interference engines.

Matt there is no 900cc FIRE for starters, so I really am worried about where you're getting half of the information from.

I feel you've got the answer you were after anyway, so all is good (y) Whether its right or not remains to be seen and down to personal opinion.

Oh  Honestjohn said there was a 900cc Fire unit found on the 'Classic' Panda.

I just find all this confusing. Can I ask how you became aware of the engine being non-interference?

Matt.

There was the 999cc FIRE originally - in the Panda and Uno. That was non-interference. I know that from experience........

Hi guys,

I've spent a lot of time checking over the bits and pieces, even watching a video of the 1242cc 8v being taken apart!!

I've noticed that the Seicento 1.1 (1108cc) is non-interference. I found that info out from Fiat. Now, the engine is pretty much (if not) the same as the one found in the 2003-2009 Panda 1.1 (1108cc) Active.

Well, having a look at everything (including the Panda which shredded the cam belt) I've come to realise that pretty much all 1242cc FIRE engines (8v only) are non-interference. Except the more modern units.

1242cc VVT (500 & KA) - Interference (169A.4000)
1242cc non-vvt (Panda and MK2 Punto) - Non interference (code 188A.4000)
1242 8v Grande Punto - From what I've read and heard, interference. (199A.4000)

hi, the 900 panda used the ancient 903cc engine from the 127 and Mk1 panda - (1970's design) - hence interference..,

my 1100cc mk3 panda had a tensioner failure and wouldn't start as 7 teeth out on the timing, retimed, and has covered another 20 K miles,

lots of mk2 panda owners have had similar belt failures, etc..,

DO NOT believe what "the press would have you believe.!!"

Hi,

Most Easterly Pandas - Are you basically saying that an early 2006 Grande Punto 1.2 8v is non-interference? What about the 1.4 8v?

I always thought the Grande Punto had all interference engines.

You learn something new everyday!

All 16V and 8v with VVT are interferance, but 8v without VVT are not :)

Good evening and I apologise for ONCE AGAIN raising this thread!! I'm sure you'll forgive me

Now, I've been given exclusive access to AUTODATA regarding the matter of interference and non-interference and here are my findings...

188A.4000 (square cap or round cap) on PANDA - INTERFERENCE.
188A.4000 punto (before and after 2001) - Non Interference
188A.4000 Lancia Ypsilon - Non interference
187A1.000 FIAT Panda (1.1) both square and round oil cap - INTERFERENCE
187A1.000 Fiat Seicento 1.1 (54bhp and Abarth/Sporting) - Non-interference
199A4.000 Fiat Grande Punto (1.2 65bhp) Interference

These are the results according to AUTODATA.

Referring to the 188A.4000, the way the cambelt is mapped, it seems a bit different between the Punto MK2 and Panda MK2. They don't look exactly the same, even though they share the same block.

Matt, can you do me a favour, the 1.1 Panda and Seicento, whats the compression ratio for each and stroke?
