Technical Oil sump need gasket or sealant?

My oil sump got a hole because it was rusty. I am about to fit a new sump and RTV sealant. I asked for a gasket, but the seller told me I don't really need a gasket if I have RTV sealant.

Now it makes me wonder if I need a gasket or not. Who is right?

No gasket, just sealant


If it's a third party pattern part make sure it's fairly flat before fitting


Be careful not to knock the oil pickup pipe

The factory sealant is applied like toothpaste, it usually has a VERY firm grip
My sump was tricky to remove, as the sealing edges were well bonded
