No, it's because on anything but billiard table smooth motorway HID's have shut a sharp beam cutoff that they fry your retina's. Have a car behind you with HID's (I'm talking Audi's, BMW's and Merc's so factory fit stuff...) and when the cars follow the undulations in the road it looks like they're flashing you.

HID's, great for seeing the person who is just about to crash into you because he's blind because of your HID's.

Not if they're correctly setup factory fit.

Well lets just say that there are a couple of roads where cars with what I'm fairly certain are factory fit HID's have this annoying effect.

Absolutely, on my trips to and from work everyday I get blinded by Audi, BMW and the likes factory fit HIDs due to undulating road surface.

I fitted HIDs to my old Fiat Coupe, basically because halogens (even the illegal 100W ones I fitted) just did not light the road up well due to lense design. The HIDs lit the road up a treat and I am reasonably satisfied that no one got blinded by them when the car was bouncing around. Fortunately the coupe has quite small dipped beam headlights so you don't get that BIG bright light on the front of the car, plus the lenses focussed the light quite well.

No way would I fit HIDs into the standard 500 light units, you would blind everybody including pedestrians.

As a regular night time cyclist, I hate HIDs with a passion, every car, factory fit or otherwise, seems to blind me as they drive towards me head on :(

Has anyone tried fitting a pair of Angel Eye/Projector Headlight units as found on fleabay? They claim they use the original bulbs.

I have not tried them but I have seen a couple of videos on youtube and they look OK.
I think you should get a set.

Fashion over function definitely. A bit like Audi rear lights, for example the brake light on the A5 runs the entire width of the boot and will very nicely illuminate the entire interior of the car behind sitting in traffic. Totally pointless and the authorities hide behind the vail of 'oh it's European regulation' when questioned about it (n)

Then there's the Land Rover "blind all oncoming motorists when indicators are on" lights - don't get me started!!

I'm not saying Austin reached the pinnacle of automotive lighting with the Minor, but the current fashion driven lighting should definitely be intensity controlled based on ambient conditions IMO. Lighting needs must be different at 90mph vs stopped, at least.

The thing I don't get is what was so wrong with lights before? You drove to the speed at which you felt safe. Now if people can see more a mile ahead you're just encouraging them to feel that they can drive faster in the dark.

More fool them if they feel that way inclined. Why shouldn't I have better visability of the muntjack in the road ahead when I'm doing 55 in the dark?

One of my front low beam lightbulbs blew today so i went to audi delaership (100 meters from the office) bought one and changed it. I am holding the blown OEM one now and noticed that Osram manufactures the OEM ones.

Just a thought. I am sure they are not the nightbreakers though!

I doubt it. people would be complaining about their bulbs going quickly then! They do make other sorts of bulbs other than nightbreakers.

Can't remember what make the OEM lights in my 500 were.

The bulb i replaced was 13 months and 33,000 km in the game. Its twin seems fine for now (i only changed one bulb)

Probably Osram, sure thats what all our newer Fiat's have been fitted with.

How much use have they had though? TBH I expect to change a pair of headlights per year on our motors - anything extra is a bonus :)

Oh I use them a lot. Everytime the engine is on; so are the low dipped heatlights.
