Would this engine fit in a fiat 500?

Id remove the backseat depending on how much it would really increase the performence.

car they dont sell in the states=

Fiat
Renault
Daihatsu
Citreon
Lancia

almost every major eropeon make except BMW and Mercedies-Benz

Speaking of citreon though could possibly an engine from a 2CV fit.

Mini, 2CV engines would fit. But the 500 isn't an easy engine to do a transplant into. See

It's an awkward shape. Any engine that wasn't intended for a rear engined car would either mean, alot of cutting away at the chassis and body, or no back seats

If you want easy parts your best bet is probably a VW Beetle engine. You can get decent sizes, they fit (Same arrangement, engine over the back, then driveshafts, then gearbox). I've seen it done.

At least that way alot of parts, standard and tuning are available and you won't have to import everything from Europe

Theres a sensible idea. 1600cc and possibly the finest 4-pot sound (well in my mind anyway) ever :)

with beetle engines are the actual blocks all the same size from 1.1to 1.6litres? I know BMW with their early 6cyl engines all used same size block from 2.0litre to 3.5litre!

if so then as said a beetle engine would be as close as you'll get to what you need

It looks like VW bug engines would be the best considering i could get alot of that stuff fully remanufactured out here and some of it new. Thats probely what im ganna go with

I also need the gearbox though any suggestions?

Sorry about that lol

Gearbox? I think you might get away with the orignal VW box, it's the same layout as a 500/600/850/126 engine and box. You might need longer/shorter drive shafts and have to play around with the suspension and engine mounts, maybe cut away the back of the engine bay if bits get in the way. But thats about it

just like to mention that the 2 pot air cooled engine are very easy to get hold of. plenty of engines in the uk and tons of them on the continent of europe. dont know why you want to put that lawnmower engine in. go for an abarth 2 pot version that uses ferrari pistons and con rods. again not hard to find. in deed there was one recently on ebay for little money. try to keep to the fiat engine. putting anything else in will need major work on a 500 due to the rear design inc the suspension.
btw, there are V8 engined 500's and 126's around, so if you remove rear seat and stick engine there, anythig will fit but will be major work and almost certainly not road useable. imagine the torque if you opened the throttle to quick!!!!:D

Well its seems like most VW parts would give the little 500 quite the big boost in horsepower and still leave it being street legel. With little or no work to be done for modifying the engine bay.

Tech Question Relating to the fiat 500 Abarth from videos ive watched of them doing track test on that model it seems as if the took the hood of of the engine bay so that the bigger would be able to fit just fine almost in the style of the baja Bug would that same tactic work for my case

So i get it lawn mower engine is out but is there any doner cars that arent fiats because i live in america and here unlike most of europe fiats are really hard to come by i mean by chance would an engine from a mini cooper or possibly a Trabant work by chance?

Some of the bits for Minis are really expensive Stateside - I remember someone saying they spent $1800 on a cylinder head. It would've cost roughly a third of that to have the same head over here in the UK.

Yup, I would say a dub engine is your best bet! Make sure the gearbox you buy is off a beetle, as the buses have reduction gears which you don't want!

The best option would be a dub engine running twin weber 40's and a porsche type fan shroud. The porsche shroud is a little lower, and will cool a little better than the standard shroud. Looks bloody cool too!

Make sure you get a twin port engine, preferably a 1600. You might want to buy a cheap engine from ebay, and then exchange it for a recon engine. Buy a dub magazine, then you'll get the contacts you need. You are going to have to do a lot of bodywork to get the engine to fit though. The good part being you only need to make mounts for the gearbox, as the engine mounts directly to the bellhousing!

think my fiat will be able to do freeway speeds of about 70 by the time im done?

With a Dub lump? Probably but top speed wouldn't be too far past 70 I would have thought :)
