Wait and see what they say; my money is on not tightening something properly.

The TA likely won't run at all once it loses oil pressure; how much permanent damage is done by then is anybody's guess. Even if they get it running again, this isn't a car I'd want to keep now.

Who serviced it - main dealer or independent garage?
I finally had to phone the garage yesterday as I still hadn’t heard from them. It seems they put the wrong oil filter in her and a new one is being delivered tomorrow. No more info other than that.

Thank you. I still haven’t heard from them so will see what they say when they call x

Hello,

On that engine the oil filter is enclosed 😉

To dump oil OUTSIDE the engine means something has failed 😔

Await further information,
but contacting an Inspection service to pre-arrange an inspection seems like a great 1st step

That doesn't sound credible to me. The twin air engine uses a replaceable paper element type filter. To change it you unscrew the filter housing, remove the old element and sealing O ring. Clean the housing and install a new filter into it and fit a new sealing O ring, then screw the housing assembly back into it's location on the engine. Wrong filter? poppy cock I say! Maybe, if they removed the old sealing ring and forgot to install the new one before reassembling? but that would be almost unbelievably unprofessional.

Edit. If they're this unprofessional I can't help wondering what oil they are filling it with - We all, on here, know how very fussy the twin airs are for exactly the right oil if they are to run well and avoid future damage to the hydraulic valve gear.

Thank you so much. Do you think I should ask for a warranty on her x

Think you'd get one?

Anyway, just so you've some idea what's involved here take a look at this video:

The point is, you could reinstall the filter casing without any element inside at all and, as long as it still had the rubber sealing ring, it wouldn't leak.

I should add to that. Please don't work under any vehicle supported only on a jack. You need some sort of solid support like an axle stand too. Also, there is great debate about what oil is best for Fiats with this hydraulic valve gear - Twin Air and Multi air - I don't own one of these but if I did I'd only be using an oil which actually stated on it's packaging that it complied with the actual FIAT spec for these engines. Shop4parts is always a good place to look for this sort of info even if you then find the actual product on an offer on ebay etc.

D'you know, I think the best thing you can do, as you have little technical knowledge, is to wait until they've done whatever they're doing and see how it turns out. I'm thinking back to how difficult it sometimes was to explain to a non technical customer when talking about something on their car. They're talking to you and then you're relaying your understanding of the situation to us. We, with no sight of the vehicle, are attempting in good faith to give you advice but without "hands on" there's plenty opportunity for misunderstanding and well intentioned but perhaps misplaced advice. I think you have to let them have a go at rectifying what's happened.

Looking at that it looks like there are at least 2 other filters that would fit,
this being one.

I wonder if fitting one of them could cause the oil pressure to rise to
a point were it would cause a leak?

Hope it all turns out right for you.

Hi, thank you for all your advice. I’m at my wits end. The garage returned my car yesterday without any prior knowledge. They returned the Service and Warranty book, stamped but not signed. Also the little square of what work was carried out is jot ticked. I have had not one phone call call from them since they collected her on Wed even. I’ve phoned them twice and they said they had put in the wrong filter. I don’t think I have any tears left. What should I do. Xx

How did you pay for this "service",
if on a credit card... There may be insurance cover from the bank

How did you get on with the AA / RAC..?

Thank you . The RAC legal department talked about the Consumer Act 2015. As the service and warranty book is not signed and the work carried out is not ticked, is she covered by the warranty. X

Fiats idiot garages seem not to stmap these things and seemd amazed when I got very shirty and told them to get it done. If the car has been serviced by a dealer this will be on record and the warranty will be valid. Ask the dealer to tell you the history. I have mostly found them helpful in this respect.
