General Which winter tyres are people going for

maybe but when you consider the price of decent low profile rubber and the expensive alloys that will corrode in the salt it makes financial sense to have a sent of winter wheels and tyres (y)

honestly the winter rubber is so much more reassuring in damp and cold conditions, never mind slushy conditions. in snow they are epic :D

of course you can drive to the conditions but can you honestly say you have never had a slide in winter conditions or locked up on slush - no thought not...
Exactly. It's funny that people take a different attitude to winter tyres than to ESP. I'll admit I'm not a fan of ESP because it can't be switched off but anyhoo.

People are happy to shell out for ESP on the off chance that something could happen, yet they're not happy to shell out for some cheap steelies and winter tyres.

The 500 is simply too light to go rolling around on 185 or 195 summer rubber in the winter.

ESP won't save you from this -> https://www.fiatforum.com/panda/171493-ice-pandas-dont-mix.html

Yes but should you really be doing 100mph on a winter tyre? Hmmm not IMHO.

The quickest I'll be going will be 80mph. here in the UK people spend much more of their time doing lower speeds on windy roads so something which can handles the occasional patch of ice or snow is much more important.

Well, as I do a lot of fast speed driving in Germany ( I own an Alfa V-6 as well...!!) I can asure you that 100 mls p/h on dry winter road, is normal overthere.
You even have to be very carefully when you are going to overtake at that speed a slower car, because those Mercedes/BMW do drive a lot faster, and they will blink you out of the way.....!!

The fact still remains that the Pirelli tyre that ADAC tested wasn't fantastic.

Our 500 could barely make it up the road today with an inch of snow and its Potenza's on. Now there's 2 and a bit inches of snow down and the 500 has very little chance of moving anywhere in the next 18 hours or so.

That's twice within 2 weeks that our mild coastal area has received snow which has made driving near on impossible or just very difficult. If the global warming movement is to be believed this means heavier snowfalls and more prolonged cold periods like the one we're in at the moment.

We are to get ours tonight, but they can't blame everything on so called global warming. Either it's going to be cold, warm or hot. We were predicted a mild winter and don't forget the barbecue summer that never was. I'm afraid I'm a firm sceptic. Wait for the flak

I'm a global warming sceptic too tbh.

Oooh first post in the 500 section for me :)

Pirelli Snowsport for me (205/45/17 on the GPS) Last year I couldn't get enough grip in weather like this with the Kumho KU31's on to get the final 1/4 mile up the hill to my house, this year i can fly up past Audi A4 Quattro's and a Suzuki 4WD!

Well, we had lot's of snow overhere as well the last two weeks, 7-8 inches on one day.....!!
My Pirelli W190 wintertyre equipped Fiat Fiorino and Fiat Palio just keep on driving......
Last week I was parked next to a brand new Lexus in heavy snow.
The rearwheel drive Lexus on wide summertyres, just couldn't move out of the parking lot, the owner was very annoyed.
I stepped in my Fiorino, started and just drove away, left the Lexus owner in complete astonishment....( and me smiling....!!) (y)

My neighbour will be wishing she had winter tyres this morning! As i did last week, she "skied" down the hill in her car today, but unlike me, she lost control (probably braked) hit the bank at the bottom, caved the front of the car in, deployed the airbags and locked the seatbelts too! A write off for sure. I got there about 3 minutes after it happened. Glad i walked to work today...

Be careful people! (y)

Nor me, even after my previous thread - but seriously considering them now, just didn't know technology had moved on so much. Mind you, most of my previous cars in winter were company cars so I had no option...

Well if I only convince one person to just take the safer option then I'm happy :)

AFAIK any Fiat 14" or 15" wheel from anything made in the last 15 years or so will fit unless it's from a Grande Punto in which case it won't fit. If you've got a 1.4 you'll need 15" wheels as a minimum. Steel wheels can be had fairly cheaply from wreckers cheaply and if you put 500 wheel covers on no one will know they didn't come as standard.

Just found this which is ideal if you're not fussed with finding your own rims and then getting tyres fitted etc etc.

They supply the tyres already fitted and balanced on steel wheels so you just need to take them down to the tyre place for swapping. More expensive of course but a good service :)

With the weather you´re having down there you all need to get studded tyres sooner or later...;) Or chains.
