Insurance only interested if it increases the risk - they'll not give you a discount if it's got steel wheels on!

I phoned them to insure a Marea, which was going to have alloys installed shortly after purchase. They put it down as having alloys and said it didn't matter if it had steel wheels before as it didn't increase the risk.

the people on the end of the phone when you buy insurance don't know a lot i wouldn't take their word for it with out getting it in writing, one of my aunts is one of them an she don't see nothing wrong with fronting for her kids.

if i change the car on my policy i have to have at least 1 mod on it or it wont be insured

am sure most policies say any change to factory spec. and don't say its OK if you are lowering the value don't worry about it we will still pay the same if you claim

What about budget tyres from China, they wouldn't pass the factory spec quality level, but you wouldnt tell insurance?

They are only interested if your about to put 22" spinners on it and every home boy on the block is going to be checking out your ride.

Tyres are different. If the tyre is E marked, undamaged and has a legal amount of tread then there's nothing the insurers can say about it :)

I have steel wheels on my 500. if i bought winter tyres and say alloy wheels - i would definately the insurance company.

Bottom line - the possible increase of a few pounds is not worth the risk of them not paying out.

Remember they will always happily take your premium - but when it comes to claim time. they will do whatever they can to not pay out.

A good friend of mine was a "claims adjuster" and he freely stated his job was to lower the payout by using any possible excuse.

It's part of the specification of the car and reduces the likelihood of you having an accident. I have no doubt you'd win a case if you went to court for them not paying out if for instance someone hit your car and it was snowing or very cold.

Quick question for those with winter tyres. Do you have seperate sets of wheels too. Or do you put your existing tyres into storage and swap them over.

I (the person who advocates winter tyres but doesn't own any because he's too poor :p ) have a seperate set of rims. The faff involved in having the tyres changed twice each year would just be silly. You'd soon cover the cost of a set of used steel wheels in a couple of years paying to have the tyres fitted and rims rebalanced all the time.

Is it possible to purchase the steel wheels like the original Fiat ones? most of the accessories websites only list alloys.

Or does it not really matter, steels are steels as it were.

Its pretty expensive, to buy 4 wheels and 4 winter tyres

Well you can do what I did and just buy a used set of steel rims and just got a can of spraypaint and gave them a few coats. Put wheelcoveres on them and to the outside world they look like the car came with them :) I got mine for about £40 off ebay though I did have to drive to pick them up.

OR you could use http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/skw.pl?dsco=110&cart_id=76732425.110.13949&s_p=Steel_wheels and they'll send you. HELLCAT YOU *&^% :p
