General Which winter tyres are people going for

General Which winter tyres are people going for

As you can see in those German (no speed limit) tire tests, is that Pirelli IS a very good overal tire, sommer and winter.
I'm a Pirelli adapt for years, use them on all of my four cars and two motorbikes, I just feel there's ( almost...) no other tire for an Italian car or motorbike. (y)

(Just imagine a new Ferrari on f.i. Vredestein tires.......)
Yes but ADAC did the test and they rated the Pirelli worse than the others. Lower numbers mean better performance. Both the Vredestein and Conti outscore the Pirelli in every single criteria on the ADAC test.

I'm not saying all Pirelli's are crap and neither was my friend. Just in their test they found the Pirelli's to be a bit rubbish in terms of this particular tyre size which is actually the standard winter tyre for the 500 on 14" wheels.

I quite fancy some P Zero Nero's for my 500 when the Potenza's are done but I'll certainly be getting Conti's or Vredestein's for winter tyres.

You are refering to the 2008 ADAC test, and that year they didn't test Pirelli in that particular size, I'm afraid...

And Vredestein.....yes...they are Dutch and make exelent tires for bycicles, but you see, Holland is small, very crowded and we do have a speedlimit on our highways, so not a good testing ground for high performance tyres.....
But again, most ( elderly) car owners in this country choose Michelin or Vredestein, no matter the cost, the two brands they know from their childhood.....

??????
Here are the scores for the Pirelli in 175/65 R14 ......

As you can plainly see the Conti and Vredestein outscore the Pirelli in every test and they DID test a Pirelli in that size.

Winter tyres aren't high performance tyres in the sense that you're going to be doing high speeds on them but the demands on them are very high because they need to cope with low temps, a bit of snow, a bit of ice, lots of water and there will be the occasional time when they might have to cope with a warm dry road.

Snow tyres are completely the wrong thing for winter driving, unless there is actually snow on the ground.

Cheers

Well yes, but the tyres that you get in the UK aren't really snow tyres but WINTER tyres,

Stuff like Vredestein's Arctrac tyres are more for Nordic conditions where you're going to be driving on Snow all the time whereas the Snowtrac range are actually more for just regular winter conditions but can cope with some snow.

I live close to the German "no speed limit" border, I often drive with constant speeds of 150-160 km/u (100 mls p/h), even under cold ( winter)conditions.
Germans drive their BMW's, Mercedes etc. with even higher speeds on winter tires, so high speed ( performance) handling is very important for me in a (winter) tire, Pirelli has it all for me.

Yes but should you really be doing 100mph on a winter tyre? Hmmm not IMHO.

The quickest I'll be going will be 80mph. here in the UK people spend much more of their time doing lower speeds on windy roads so something which can handles the occasional patch of ice or snow is much more important.

autobahn are limited to 100 or 110 kph in rain IIRC

germans are quick drivers though, i remember once being in a taxi doing what felt like 100 mph on the motorway and there was snow on the ground - certainly woke me up

any winter tyres will be a massive improvement over normal tyres

have a look on eBay (y)

Well, if you say so. But at the risk of swimming against the tide here, after 20years of driving I have never changed the tyres for winter, and never had any consequential event that has proven the need for them.

I regularly drive in the Alps on normal tyres, no issues.

Can't help thinking that you guys are just generating a winter tyre market that the manufacturers are lapping up!

maybe but when you consider the price of decent low profile rubber and the expensive alloys that will corrode in the salt it makes financial sense to have a sent of winter wheels and tyres (y)

honestly the winter rubber is so much more reassuring in damp and cold conditions, never mind slushy conditions. in snow they are epic :D

of course you can drive to the conditions but can you honestly say you have never had a slide in winter conditions or locked up on slush - no thought not...
