Chris, were you thinking the same as me that it might use more 5w40 than 10w40?

I'm not sure what it was filled with from the factory, but it needed a couple of top ups in the first 12k miles (approx every 4k miles) but has only required one top up in the run up to the 24k service and that was about 6k miles in. I'm not sure if any meaningful conclusions can be drawn from that, but it'll be interesting to watch it after the next service and see how consumption continues...

Does that tie in with your experiences?

Chris

Bit of a follow-up to this. I've done nearly 8,000 miles since it was last serviced when they put 5w40 in. Since then I've had to put 2 litres in to keep it on the max on the dipstick.

I might not be the gentlest of drivers but it doesn't go everywhere flat out. 2 litres is a hell of a lot of top-up in my book.... might go back to 20K 10w40.

I had the wifes 1.4 stilo serviced the other week and I specifically asked them to use the 20K over the 5w/40..I found the 1.4 engine drank the stuff when it was on the 5w/40..and as I use the 20k in the panda as well i dont have to buy two lots of oil..:D

mines on 10w40 and not used any so far (~1000miles) but it does sound awful when started!

does anyone know the correct operating oil pressure (idle and with relief valve open) for this engine?

just that it's a rattly engine from cold, stupid hydraulic lifters..i miss the sound of my 8v :(

induction and exhaust note ( grin factor) are better tho

I use Mobil 1 0w-40 in mine and have to admit it does use a fair bit of oil, but nothing drastic. IMO it helps at cold start by circulating quicker and my engine doesn't sound like a bag of nails at start.

I'm changing it every 3k just because I can (being in the trade has to have some benefits!) and when you can by it in at £5/litre (by the way, anyone can get it at CostCo for the same price as I discovered last night!) there's no reason not to, especially as I don't think 2.9 litres is enough to do 12k miles worth of lubrication!

I'm using the same oil for top up's mainly because it's the same oil that we use in the Integra.

What oil does the manual recommend for the 100HP and how much do you need for a change?

I've got a 5lt Silkolene Pro-S 5w-40 bottle left over from my previous car, will this be OK for the 100's engine?

will take mine for a service so will tell them to put 5w40 in and not too bothered about the brand as long as its reputable
