General Twinair Trip Around Europe

Sat 22/06/24

Last day, and need to pack for an early start (07-00'ish) to Gravere, Italy.
Satnav says 498kms and 8.5hrs, so I'll plan for 12hrs, and hopefully arrive around 18-00, I'll take a few routes of my own so who knows.

I have a new plan for this leg of the journey, I've made a list of all the places I want to head for, on my designated route, rather than relying totally on where the satnav takes me.

Checked fluids, and even got around to giving it a wash :)

I did notice however, the coolant level was at minimum, and evidence of dried coolant on the joint lip of the reservoir tank.

I did tighten the pipe previously when I noticed this issue, but it doesn't seem to have cured it, I also flexed the joint without over doing it, and it seemed quite solid. I'll keep an eye on it. It's done nearly a 1000 miles, so it's not exactly pouring out. (yet :))
Easy fix plastic glue needed quick. If you loose coolant try running with the cap unlocked to remove the pressure. Looks like the header tank may be getting ready to dump on you. Dont fiddle with it, just top up would me my advice until you are home no risk of breaking the hose attachment nipple off.

You Sure that's not the aircon drain..?
Really normal to see this from that place with air con.
PS Great posts. Im really enjoting reading. I did 1020 miles 4 up in the panda a week ago round Northumbria, and a 500 mile trip on Friday in my Panda TA.

I thought that too, but the boiling point is raised by having the system under pressure, so if I lower the pressure it could run the risk of over heating prematurely.
Not on a recent car, Ive done this before no probs. Put the pressure cap back firmly if altitude increases and you should be Ok.

This stuff is very good on hard car plastics

If I get back with it in one piece, it won't be a repair. I'll get a new tank, it will deserve it. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Well, it's Abisko Mountain Lodge, Sweden tomorrow, then sightseeing in Narvik for the first day, then a camping stop at the tip of the Loften Isles, Norway the second day, before heading south two days after that. Had about 5 days of sunshine now, I seem to have left the rain behind for a bit. No doubt it come back when try to pitch the tent.

Interesting to experience the no night thing. Winter must be a nightmare.

chilled and showered, settled for evening.

Sun 14th
Drove into town to get the DRL bulbs, found a fantastic mancave of blokey stuff called Motonet, Oulu.
Motonet

They had all under one roof, tools, car spares, fishing gear, even managed to get a set of hair trimmers, (something that I had forgot to bring)

Got back to the house and changed the bulbs, and gave it a wash, to get the flies off and other traffic debris. Checked Coolant, perfect.

Anyone know how the ECO Hero works? I reset it, and the left hand value is now just three underscores where the values used to be, and the right hand value changes ever half hour or so to show current MPG, max I've had is 55.1, but it's gone down to 53.6 and hovers around there. Why is the left hand side blank, anyone know?

Spent rest of evening preping for the off tomorrow.

Mon 15th

Departed Oulu at 07-15
Arrived Abisko Guest house 15-30
ODO: 73319

Lots of stops for photo ops, fantastic scenery, this place is unbelievably beautiful. Full of lakes, and ponds of all different shapes and sizes, and on all sorts of different topographical heights, most are flowing from the higher to lower ones.

Tues 16th

Went to Narvik Museum in the morning, a bit under whelming to be honest, interesting none the same. What I took from it was, it was almost none existent until the Brits wanted to mining iron ore in Kiruna, Sweden, and took it across to Narvik, Norway to ship where ever. Two towns grew up in both places, and are still growing, I saw the evidence.

Pulled over today, needed a knap. A little later I turned the key nothing.
Stuck my pocket voltmeter battery, it was reading 17v, that to me says I have a problem. Waited a few minutes, and turned the key again and it started. Jumped in and off I went. Have arrived at destination now, and will wait until it cools down and inspect again. I seriously hope it is not frying my battery.

UPDATE: Nope, dodgy multimeter, (its about 25 yrs old little gimiky wallet type thing) went out and got a new one to add to my collection. Batterys fine.

I'm in the queue to get on a ferry, at Moskenes, Norway!!
So stuck some of that gunk in and did a lap around the car park, then inflated with compressor, and did another lap, so gonna keep fingers crossed for when the ferry lands...not sure when it happened?

Posted that above a bit prematurely, but I was bored sitting in the car park waiting for my ferry...

Anyhow.....

Weds 17th
Arrived Fredvang, Lofoten Isles, 14:10 hrs (you really need to see that link in 3D) and what a fantastic journey, the resilience of these people is amazing, to put up with the winters here, you must be made of stern stuff. But the scenery and views are totally breathtaking. This place is for the younger generations, who can take advantage of the freedom to explore here, as the treks are particularly demanding, and dangerous. All the older generations did was clog up the place with massive motor homes in an attempt to appreciate the views, which they did of course.

Got settle at accomodation, and popped into the nearest town called Ramberg, to get some odds and ends (+ voltmeter)

Thurs 18th
20240719_120058.jpg

Ferry options were, Prebooked or turn up and wait your turn, you may wait for another ferry if there isn't enough room (2-4hrs wait)
I went for the prebooked, (you get priority boarding) and it's cheaper, but very late (23-45) but don't forget it doesn't get really dark so it doesn't feel late.
20240719_175426.jpg

As my ferry wasn't till 23-45 I went to 'A' at the tip of the islands. Theres nowhere to setup camp there, and I wasn't inclined to carry all my stuff to the cliff edge, so took my pics, and moved on. It was a bit too touristy for me.

20240719_104849.jpg

At the ferry terminal I men a fishing party from Essex, who were waiting for their connection to get to the boat.

Later I met a gentleman (can't remember from where, but spoke really good queens english) that was walking around europe, well bussing, training, and in whatever direction took his fancy.

Then, come the time to queue, a chap in another lane taps on my window to tell me I have a puncture. (ref post above)

20240719_144448.jpg

As the ferry leave at 23-45 and docks at ~04-00, I thought I'd try and divide the destination by two rather long trips.
My next destination was therefore Fagerhaug some 800kms (down the E6 road) 11hrs.

Sun 21st

Checked fluids, coolant ok, needed some oil (I brought some with me) put in a third of a 1ltr bottle. First time this trip.
Tyre holding up, no change since adding the laytex foam or whatever it is.

Washed flies off the front, this is becoming a daily job prior to setting off.

Heading for Kristiansand for the ferry.

Sun 21st continued

This was the main building housing reception and restaurant
Opdalsporten
Very interesting wooden building.

Signed up for Epass24, apparently many of Sweden, and Norways roads are toll roads, and you number plates are constantly being read along the motorways, and you don't have to slow down for them to read. They can also spot fine you for completing sections too fast! . There are addition fines for late payment etc, so signed up, better late than never.

Complete dive of a shed furnished with what looks like the contents of a charity shop, couldn't sleep in the bed, had to use the sofa, and that was only moderately cleaner, kept my clothes on for fear of being bitten by creepy crawly critters. Sprayed the whole inside area with Raid, which I carry with me since Poland.

Lighting almost none existent, good job I have my camping gear.

Tues 23rd
Went to the local stores, bought my groceries, and the other half of the building was a charity shop, who would have thought?
Glad to get out of here.
Checked fluids, oil fine, coolant fine, tyre fine. :p

Arrived Mygdal Hus, near Skagen 19:00hrs
ODO: 75643

The owners met me at the gate, turned out to be a lovely Hungarian couple, (Steffan & Ava) Steffan quickly introduced me to his own brew of 52% Parlinka (Brandy), Steffans friend (Paal) also turned up to provide translation, I almost never got time to get my things out of the car, after they plied me with food and drink for the evening I hit the sack, and was out instantly.
20240725_094202.jpg

Thurs 25th
Paal arrived about 10 oclock, to take us all to Skagen, as I'd asked about what to see in Denmark.
At the point they say "where the two seas met" I counted 26 ships across the horizon.

He wasn't interested, I think I had more stripes than him.. :ROFLMAO: he did open the bonnet and to be honest it looked old and had loads of space in there, it sounded good though, you know as it should do. It was the 2009, 1,2 8V. He showed me the registration doc. I was asking if he wanted to stick the MES on it out of curiosity, but he wasn't interested.
