Hi,
I have a 1999 Ducato 2.8TD. Had a timing belt Jan 2019 has now done 20K miles on this belt should it be replaced?
If yes should the water pump also be done?
Thanks
Personally , my short answer is yes to both . Technically , cambelt replacement is every 5 years , or so many miles , i think somewhere between 50 to 70000 miles . Now on an honest note here , camper vans rarely make this mileage , i know i don't . So i can't give the actual figure .
But what i would say is , if you're feeling flush then by all means do . It certainly won't hurt .
Now on the question of water pump , is it leaking ? . If not then really there's no need , however , when was this pump last changed , has it ever been replaced ? . Personally i replaced mine 2 years back on a year 2000 . It wasn't leaking either , but my excuse was , i figured 22 years was a good age for something immersed in water , and yes it was the original . However in my case it led to a full cooling system rebuild , when i found a few hidden nasty's . But i'm in no way saying you should follow my lead . Some parts were difficult to source , and as my van is a left hooker , many of these had to come from Europe . The result , it took 18 months to complete ! .
However , what i will add is , the timing system does have to be disturbed to replace the water pump , despite the fact it is not driven by the cambelt itself . The 230's cambelt tensioner is mounted on the water pump body , so a cambelt change is the ideal time to change the water pump . Personally i would replace the fan belt as well . I did , actually i replaced the alternator too , and yes that also has to be disturbed .
Just my opinion , you don't have to take it .
