Punto (Mk2/2b) The car I wasn't going to change...

Introduction

Bought my Punto back in June (2012): to replace a (well it was originally) white 1994 Clio 1.4 RT automatic, that's now gone to Renault heaven. It was just meant as a second car: spending most of the time sat on the drive... -- especially as we had just ordered a brand new Panda TwinAir Dualogic... (which then failed to materialize: hence the 2009 Panda currently starring in my signature, below...).

However, something about this (extremely cheap) FIAT really got to me... -- whether just the sheer joy with which it revs; or the way it chucks itself round corners; or even the quirkiness of the electrics... -- and I found myself tinkering with a car for the first time in many, many years. Not since I owned a succession of VW Beetles and Mk1 and Mk2 Ford Escorts, in the '80s, have I had so much fun...! :)

Because I'm disabled, it had to be an automatic, of course. Also, any 'heavy lifting' means that I have to take it to a garage to be fettled... -- so the progress you see below is a mix of me getting (slightly) oily, and Black Cat Motors taking up the slack, and doing much more than their fair share of the difficult stuff...! ;)

I haven't got the stamina (or attention span) to post everything at once: so, for starters, here's the photo that attracted my attention -- and, I must admit, initially put it near the bottom of the list of cars I went to test-drive... (sorry) -- on AutoTrader:

More to follow, shortly...!

Edit
Here's how the car now looks (May 2014): (y)

My poor little Punto was feeling a little sorry for itself: I'd started getting repeat lambda faults (first on the top one, then the bottom...); and, after a particularly heavy storm, she wouldn't start (until I gave the HT leads a little TLC with some WD40...). Also: the FIAT-branded stat that was fitted with the HG replacement, and top-end refurb, 7,000 miles ago, was taking forever to warm up....

I then realized that, in the 16,000 miles, and 20 months, I'd owned the car, I'd not changed the leads or plugs.... :nono:

So; two new NTK lambdas; four new plugs (courtesy of Sturgess Motor Group); some nice OEM HT leads, and a Gates thermostat (as recommended by Big Mick at Eurocarcare.net) -- and the car is running very nicely, with -- subjectively -- smoother and easier acceleration. The temperature gauge also shoots straight up to the middle mark -- and stays there! :woot:

I'm now praying that there will be no more lambda faults; and that the cat is fine. The plugs that came out (NGK DCPR8E-N) were actually a lovely, slightly-darker-than-a-digestive colour: so all seems to be well. The leads, though, were well overdue replacement....

All she needs now is a good clean (for a change...). :p

yellow + winter = never clean

yup very true, im forever washing mine, im just glad igot a good 100 coats of polish/wax on it through the summer, makes it easier clean,

the alloys are a mare tho, :(

I was going to wash and wax the car, at the weekend, for a Midlands Italia meet, at Monmouth -- but a five-day migraine put paid to that.

However, I did -- this morning, after checking oil, water, tyres, etc.... -- finally get round to fitting one of my Christmas presents (well, four of them, actually...)! :D

Sadly, as you can tell from the piccies, the bits underneath these are currently the only clean parts of the car.

This will be rectified, when I get back from visiting my parents, this weekend (150 miles each way...). :chin:

Had a bit of an oil leak; and a slight coolant leak; and another oil leak. This thread tells all.... :(

All fixed, now...! (y)

Then, when the weather improves, I have loads of minor jobs to sort -- including a directionless squeak: that I only get when it's dry, and below about 10°C. Weird. And it's not the exhaust rubbing -- although it also seems dependent on the number of passengers I carry (the more peeps, the less squeaks): although that could be coincidinks.

Time also for a clean, polish and wax, methinks.... :D

I know I have a reputation for turning up at Midlands Italia meets with a dirty Punto -- but, as founder, and beloved leader, I believe this is my prerogative: especially as I always turn up to shows with a clean and shiny car.... :p

Anyhoo: decided to break the mould, today, for the Donington meet, on Sunday. Five hours later, and I'm knackered... -- and I haven't even done the inside....

Yep agree, plenty of wax helps the rain run off, makes it easier to clean later on

ive been using the dodo wax igot off Sturgess fiat on here,
the bead on this stuff is awesome,

What make are your aeroblade wipers mate?

Bosch Aerotwin Retrofits (AR22U: £11.42; and AR18U: £10.20), from Wiper Blades Ltd. Fitted 13 June, last year (9,000 miles ago): and still going strong. Definitely worth the dosh. (y)

Fitted some to Mrs homeward's Mk3 Panda, at the same time; and she's done 13,500 miles since. Also working very well. :)

Thankyou, (y)

Looks very nice homey, I don't do car washing personally, no idea where you find the energy or five hours in which to clean it. I just go to the local Shell garage and sit in a box for a few minutes. Have waxed the bonnet once though as it was a little dull. Will do the whole Punto one day in the summer. Autoglym best?
