Technical Stilo JTD EGR Blanking Plate

Remapped diesels produce more particulates(smoke) because the engine is over fuelled.

Your car was remapped for max power so will be producing far more particulates and crap than normal. The down side to this is the EGR system is subjected to far more crap than normal, quickly causing problems. Blanking off the EGR at position B prevents any crap from entering the EGR system at all but position A will do just as well.

Has blanking off the EGR reduced the amount of smoke the car was producing and has it effected performance?

Hi Stu, hope u r well, to answer your question, I've only driven it a mile back from the garage, but seemed a lot less smoke and it still seemed to go OK, time will tell

Morning Dave, all good this end mate, hows you and yours?

I suspected it might be the EGR when you first posted about having problems.
Hello Dave.

Is there any chance your EGR could be sticking, I believe this can cause an excess of smoke.

Glad you got it sorted mate.

I think you'll find blanking the EGR off does makes the car feel better, quicker throttle response etc., I know mine does.

All OK thx. Now its blanked off its still smoking, its very bad in the dark with cars behind even if not reved past 3000 rpm. The performance seems not quite so good, it feels like I have lost about 15 bhp. I have put a new air filter in, no difference, fuel filter is quite new. I really dont think it should be smoking so badly, I might go and get the emissions checked now at an MOT place. What can cause smoke, as well as a blocked EGR ? It does'nt burn any oil at all, so I guess it can only be unburn't fuel

Hi all , slightly off topic but i cleaned my egr today and as was very carboned up , The piston was quite stiff and filled with black soot. cleaned it all out and freeed up the piston and easliy moves with finger pressure now.How does this work? does the electrical half of the egr push out the litle centre part and opens/closes the piston? simalar to a brake caliper?if so how can we check the electrical side is fully working and opening and closing as it should?
also on the pipe that comes down off the behind of the egr should it have a o ring were it joins to the other section?becasue mine never and thoguht that was odd.
In post #14 on the second picture what is the black box in the bottom left ? i have fault code P0380 - plate heating relay (somthing todo with the preheat failure im getting) i thought maybe this was a relay?
thanks for your time.

well i got the outer clamp and bolt which tightens the joint to gether i just thoguht there should be an o-ring inside sealing the joint?
seemed fine when i drove it home but still a bit of smoking wehn putting foot down , does it need time to clear all the old stuff that has come loose from the cleaning?

if that box failed , would my car start and run fine? just trying to narrow down my preheat failure warning.

i dont the test to day and got no reading from Pin 1 (YELLOW) = Cylinder 4
so its either the plug or the lead described in this thread.gona chnage the plug my self tomorow as i have already bought it today.will report back :D

hi all i have just put in the egr blanking plate but on the firs page there are to picture one is for a jtd 16v and the other for the 8v

********** i have placed the place on position A - on the throttle body itself, is that a good place or should i change it to on the egr itself????? **********

i am still trying to get the nuts loose on position B but that aint moving at all, those nuts havent moved since the car was new they are really tight. any tips on how to get them out, i have tried doing it after a long drive thinking there hot they will come off but no go. have to wait for them to cool off. will spray some wd40 on them not and leave it soak in.

Well I have been for a good drive with the blanking plate installed by the throttle body and bloody hell it has made a big difference some how, I have honestly got much better throttle response and acceleration. It really picks up speed quick now and god knows how ha ha. I am happy ha ha

Big thanks to shadeyman

Hi, in order to not open another thread i will post here,

So, i ordered a blanking plate for my 115jtd.

The question is where should i put it? And as you know the pipes of the egr have alluminium gaskets, so where the gasket should be(in front or after blanking plate, or no more gasket?
And also in the picture below, where is better to put the blanking plate: position 1 or 2?

This is the Fiat and Bosch recommended position for the official modified swirl plate, so a blanking plate is likely to go in the same position.

Davren: Number 2 are gaskets, i have only 1 gasket mounted between that pipe and the EGR, and i don't know where to put it

Chris017 how's the car working with the plate in that position?

well i find that it works really good. the main thing and the biggest is the power is instant.
but when i put the blanking plate on i cleaned the inlet manifold the same time. as it was full of black gunk from the egr valve. think that helped as i cleaned all the pipes out.

but i am going to put another blanking plate on the pipe under the egr. but most people put it on the pipe that comes off the manifold, i would uswel but cant get it off at all.

it is simple enough to put on number 2 in the picture.
if you loosen the 3 bolts that hold the egr onto the engine it makes it much easier to slide the plate in. plus put your finger in the hole to the inlet ( sorry if it sounds dirty) and see if it comes out black. if so, you need to pull the inlet off and clean it with carb cleaner.
plus clean the egr valve before fitting it all back together

hope that helps as thats how i done it
