After thinking about various problems I've been having I'm planning on replacing the steering lock / ignition switch and wanted to ask if there is anything I need to watch out for. I've got a Launch x431 scan tool, but I'm not sure if it can do key encoding and how I would go about that when switching out the entire ignition switch.

Any advice?

Hi,
If I remember correctly, your problems is that the engine cuts out, and that sometimes this is related to switching the headlights on.

It is my understanding that the main power supply to the headlights does not pass through the igniton switch, but you should able to confirm this via eLearn.

If I am correct, then this suggests that your fault may be between the battery, and the ignition switch. I have already suggested on another thread, that the engine bay fusebox is a possible location of the underlying fault.

Hi

Not sure where your problem lies, but I believe that both the contact carrier and the key barrel can be readily removed from the lock housing.
That would be great, then no need to code new keys. Have any links to a tutorial for something like this?

Basically, as I've explained in another post, been having weird intermittent loss of coms with various computers, and sometimes the truck won't start. Sometimes, I'll turn the key to the run position, and there won't be any power to the dash, windows or anything else. Then I'll turn it to the start position and nothing will happen. Then after a number of attempts suddenly everything will work fine like nothing happened. The only common point of failure for everything is the ignition barrel, I'm assuming a problem either with the contact carrier or the main internal contacts.

I thought those things were related, but after going over all my old DTC reports and thinking about everything going on, I think the headlights issue is coincidental and not causal.

Hi

Here are some pictures from Elearn. Procedures/Electrical Equipment/5520 Engine Starting/5520A Ignition Switch

As far as I know, all the electrical switching is within the contact carrier, but it should be obvious if you unclip it.

I bought a whole new assembly and just swapped my lock cylinder out for the new one. Had to cut slots in the bolts with my oscillating tool and use a impact screw driver to unscrew the security bolts. So far it's starting every time and I've driven it a few hours so far. Still have a CAN bus error between the insturment panel and body computer though... We'll see how it goes...
