after taking the car out for half hour or so i keep getting back home and lifting the bonnet. I pull out the dipstick and it's smoking and smell of burnt oil, same from the oil filler cap but not so much smoke but still burn't oil smell.

What could this be? is the engine overheating? engine gets hot but not sure how hot is too hot. oil temp gauge is always in the middle when warmed up.

i'm not sure of the cause but a few things worth checking.

coolant level.
does fan come on.
is oil changed regularly.
and filters etc.
temp gauge problem.

can you smell burning before opening the bonnet? oil + engine must get pretty hot anyway. why did you check the dipstick level after each journey?

sorry i can't be more help

Check crankcase breathers arnt blocked. A little smoke/fumes is normal after a run on a high mileage engine. Is water temp guage showing any signs of overheating/running hotter than normal?

As above, check breathers.

Has the oil been run too full at all?

Depending on mileage, service history etc it could be wear induced blow by causing crankcase compression...

Hi again thanks for all your replies (y)

No idea wat the crankcase breathers are sorry lol temp gauge seems fine, going up to the middle and staying there.

You mention an oil temp guage, I assume you mean coolant temp guage?

What sort of mileage has the car done? and as already asked by others, is the oil at the right level?

Jon.

Not had the car too long so not sure when the oil has been topped up/changed but it does go slightly over max when engine cold. Mileage is 58k.

could be this coupled with the engine overheating which is another problem i've been having recently. 1 of the radiator fans wasn't working so checked the fuse for it and was blown so replaced on Monday and today thats also blown.
From reading around I hear this could mean the fan motor is on it's way out, is this true? Can the motor be replaced or does all the fan assembly need to be changed as looking on shopforparts it's £134 for a new one

Cars in the garage tomorrow anyway for a coolant and oil change to be on the safe side but i guess i need this fan sorting aswell if it's a lemon. sigh.

Follow the hose connected to the cam cover that is plumbed back into the air intake system. Remove it at both ends and clean. It'll just be a rubber hose. May t-off into the inlet manifold/throttle body as well as the air intake.
