General Servicing (again)

General Servicing (again)

Personal opinion here.
Manufacturers ... most of them... like you to think their vehicles can cover extended mileages between services. That is a major selling point, particularly for Leasing / Rental companies, as they can see these vehicles as having essentially no servicing during their ownership.
Yes lubricants are now very very good compared with even 10 years ago, however the bottom line is, as always, who picks up the reapair tab once the Warranty has expired? Now this wont matter if you only keep a car for the period it has a Warranty, but in these potentially Double Dip recession days we may all be keeping them a bit longer, except maybe for Company car drivers who probably dont care anyway...

Annual servicing is good for the car & the wallet, some may be lucky but others wont be...

In the words of Clint Eastwood in (was it) Dirty Harry...?

Do you feel lucky punk?

It's up to the owners of course, I just hope I never inadvertently buy such a car TBH...

this may all be true but you can pick up an engine and gearbox on ebay that has 2000 miles on it for under £800. We are not talking an expensive car here.

Aaaah - you wouldn't have to spend 800 quid plus the hassle of fitting a replacement engine if you looked after it in the first place? Or have I missed something?

But my car will have it's oil changed every 2 years and I bet it will last as long as one that has it's oil changed every year.
I am just saying worst case it's not going to cost thousands to get a new engine.

Then there is fitting, a wise guy would service it... and dealer charges for ECU & Body computer re-set... & no matter how cheap or expensive, used parts can come with their own challenges.

Isnt it far easier, more convenient, eminently more sensible & logical to just do the servicing every year?

Spot on fella...

The engine will not just suddenly blow up if it is not serviced every year. The service schedule says 2 years or 18,000 miles.

Like I said earlier, it's all about choices, you make your choice, you take your chance. I personally believe that changing oil once every two years is shortsighted and a mistake, but that is only my opinion. Unless of course you change the oil, shove the car in your garage and don't use it! My Chrysler has been sat in my garage for two years now and hasn't moved. I changed the oil in that just after I garaged it and I wouldn't dream of spending another 40 quid putting new oil in it - that would be stupid (in my opinion):D

Aaaw shucks! Just when we seemed to be getting a little argumentative - only joking - or isn't that allowed!!!(y)

Arguments are fine, entertaining even, just shouldnt get abusive...

Even if some abuse their cars lol! :D

In a Used Car ad, does Full Service History mean exactly that or what? How would the car the OP has qualify? And would you happily buy it versus another similar spec / age car for the same price where it could be shown Servicing had been done by the book?

I'm sick of jokes! Now, about that..........
I'm sick of your mum

Sorry, that's just the first thing that popped into my childish brain........

Aaah, well these things are sent to try us! My family home is only a couple of miles from the VW factory in Uitenhage, so maybe I should have bought a VW! I'm still going to phone home tonite though and tell her she's been insulted!!

I'm hearing the Death rattle for this Thread already!

A good time to interject with an amusing little anecdote from another forum I frequent.

Chap had bought a car 5 or 6 years ago. It'd only done 30,000 miles or so and he proceeded to use it for the next 6 years (and 60,000 miles or so) without taking it in for a single service.. no oil change, no nothing. He didn't want to spend the money on a service...

Inevitably, the engine seized. He had to pay something in the region of £1,000 for the second hand unit and fitment (arguably a hell of a lot more than 5 oil services would have cost him). He then posted on the forum that "The moral of the story is that you should always get your car serviced!"

Well gee.. thanks for the top tip professor. I only thought the service schedule was put in the handbook for the fun of it.

FWIT I change the oil on my VR6 every 5,000 miles - it's one of the cheapest and easiest things you can do to prolong the life of the engine, along with letting it warm up fully before giving it any abuse!
