Hi,

New to the site, my 17yo son purchased a 1.2 pet Punto 54 plate in June. the other day to told me he was having trouble with 3rd gear. I and a mechanic friend checked, looks like 3rd gear has no "teeth" left and 2nd is not sounding good.

Basically he has no money and needs the car for college (yes I'm paying fuel cost!), so I need to source a replacement box, I have someone who will fit it but where do I go for a box that will work and not do the same thing a few months do the line.

I have found a full recon box (or so they say with 12 mths warranty but it says 1999-2003, would the 2004 still be the same box or did they change it on facelift?

Has anybody got any suggestions please?

Thx

gearbox should be same up to grande

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

Please bear in mind I've never had a Fiat before so, to clarify if possible, the Punto gearbox for 1.2 petrol from 1999 to 2006 were all the same, no variants?

Cheers

Thanks for the reply.

Mine is a 1.2 pet late 2004.

The unit I'm looking at is advertised as

Fiat Punto 1.2 8v 5 Speed Reconditioned Gearbox 1999-2003 - "Fully Reconditioned 5 speed Fiat Punto 1.2 8v Gearbox 1999-2003. Gearbox 'Domino' dot code inside bell-housing: Four and Two"

Attached are two pictures of it.

Any advice you can give me would help immensely as I have not idea about gearboxes and fitment.

Thanks

When i changed the gearbox i but there fiat bravo 1.8 gearbox sitts well but i thrilled one fixation hole more and its works very fine

I would have a word with a local breaker. He probably knows exactly what will fit your car. In many cases so called reconditioned gearboxes have been steam cleaned and that's it. The true cost to properly recondition a gearbox is uneconomical compared with what is on offer from scrappy yards.

i heard that before, that they supposedly just wash it and then sell it as reconditioned, this is actually a scam if they are rly doing it

There seems to be so many different types of gearbox descriptions out there, is there anyway I can find out what the exact part code I require (most seem to be described like this 188A4.000 or 188A5.000 etc)

I'm at a lost to find the code, will try main dealers tomorrow, but do hold out much hope with them.

OK will do.

Will have to do it tonight as I'm at work at moment.

Thanks for your help

These are best I can do with G'box in the car, hopefully you will be able to tell from these.

I'm running a Punto 1.2 8v engine (from a 2003 Punto 60) in my Uno and the gearbox you've listed above is the one I've used. In fact the first gearbox change I did was from a 2001 Punto 1.2 8v. As long as the engine is the Fiat F.I.R.E 8v engine (1999-2006) the box above should be fine. Any subtle revisions can usually be swapped across from your old gearbox.

The box you're looking for should be marked "C" and have a 514 code on it.

Thanks for the info, where would I find the

"The box you're looking for should be marked "C" and have a 514 code on it" on the gear box please.

Cheers:confused:

The "514" code is located under the gearbox.

The "C" marking is located on the area of the gearbox that faces the passenger seat. It is also in a difficult position to see.

There is no guarantee that a used gearbox won't die on you a few months later. I don't normally spend more than £80 from a scrap yard. The first one worked but 1st gear was difficult to engage. The second gearbox I paid £60 for and it works fine (touch wood).

The only way you're going to get a guarantee that the box has been reconditioned to a high standard and that it won't die on you is to get one from a decent supplier. One that will offer you a 1 year warranty etc.

I haven't used these guys but if I was going to spend some decent money for some peace of mind I might look at buying one of their boxes. They seem to specialise in Punto's. Why not give them a call. I'm sure they'll be able to confirm what gearbox you'll need.

Ive gone down both routes
Recon and 2nd hand

Recon ive had better and worse luck

2nd boxes ivebhad

1st disentergrated
2nd 3rd gear syncro wad made of rocks, couldnt get third without a magix potion
3box I had, diff clicked badly.... thats how my first box died when I brought it...

Recons
Ive had 1 go noisey
1 spray oil over a vrand new clutch
And tbh this current box aint filling me with confidence but tbh im past caring now I just live with the noise

It is the chance we have to take unfortunately. I'm on box number 3. 1st box clutch disintegrated leaving a large hole through the bell housing. 2nd worked but the synch in 1st gear was shot making it difficult to engage 1st gear. It became frustrating so I got box number 3.

I've only just installed it. Putting all the bits back in then I'll take it for a test drive. Hoping it'll be fine. The scrapyard told me he has another if this doesn't work. It is all fine and well saying that but the amount of time and effort to remove and replace the box all over again is such a mission.

The 188 is the chassis number for thr mk2 and mk2b

The A4000 is the 1.2 8v engine
The A5000 is the 1.2 16v engine

There are other engines in the range
